The first table of the law governs our relationship to the God of life, the second table governs our relationship to the gift of life. The gift of human life is something we not only hold individually, it is also something we hold together. These commandments foster human flourishing in this world. The fifth commandment deals with the structured relationships of human life, for example parents/children, husband/wife, master/servant, church/believer.
