The Problem
Discrimination is one of the most heated issue today.
discrimination is applied to race, social status and gender
discrimination results in injustice, maltreatment, and abuses
Discrimination has become a purely negative thing, and is applied to practically all forms of differentiation and distinction.
in short - to discriminate is wrong, period;
Discrimination is mostly defined as -
3 a: the act, practice, or an instance of discriminating categorically rather than individually
b: prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment 〈racial discrimination〉 synonym see DISCERNMENT—dis•crim•i•na•tion•al \-shnəl, -shə-nəl\ adjective
the verb form is defined as -
to make a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit 〈discriminate in favor of your friends〉 〈discriminate against a certain nationality〉
prejudiced or prejudicial outlook, action, or treatment
based on - color of the skin, race/nationality, gender, wealth/social standing
But there is a positive definition of the word discriminate -
1 a: to mark or perceive the distinguishing or peculiar features of
b: DISTINGUISH, DIFFERENTIATE 〈discriminate hundreds of colors〉
2: to distinguish by discerning or exposing differences especially: to distinguish from another like object verb intransitive
the Latin origin discrimen means ‘distinction’; from discernere, “to distinguish between”
There is no English word discriminate in the Bible, but there is the equivalent ‘discern, discernment’ and ‘distinguish’;
The Key Point
the Bible does speak out against discrimination that leads to injustice and abuse
but the Bible also teaches us how discrimination/distinguishing becomes beneficial.
Discrimination in O.T. times
Distinction between Sethites and Cainites
God separated Cain from Adam’s family, and a separate Cainite genealogy was created

Discrimination in the time of the Patriarchs

Discrimination in the N.T.
The Jews were very legalistic in making a distinction between Jew and Gentile, holy and ‘sinner’, etc.
Jesus’s ministry showed a radical change in behavior towards race, gender and social standing
Jesus dined with sinners
Jesus received sinners into his tutorship
Jesus recognized and praised the faith of Gentiles
Jesus sent his disciples to the world!
preach the gospel to every creature
make disciples of all nations
Discrimination in the Grace Dispensation
the gospel is offered to all nations
the gospel makes Jews and Gentiles one in Christ
the promised Holy Spirit brings all believers on the same level in Christ
Where the egalitarians got it wrong
egalitarianism - belief in human equality especially with respect to social, political, and economic rights and privileges
who are the egalitarians
those who believe that women have a right to the same privileges as the men
those who believe that men, women, and gay have the right to become church leaders
those who believe that men and women are equal in authority at home
Galatians 3.28 does not apply to men and women roles
because the Bible makes distinction between men’s and women’s roles
husbands love your wives…wives submit to your husbands…
the head of the woman is the man
because the gospel does not abolish the distinction between men and women
yes, the gospel does make no more distinction between Jew and Gentiles
Discrimination still applies to certain things
between believers and nonbelievers - 2 Cor 6.14-17
between holy and unholy
between idols and the true God
between the works of darkness and the fruit of the spirit
between a person living in sin and a person who was fall into and repents
What does Galatians 3.28-29 mean, if not equality of men and women?
all are “sons” - meaning men and women are all “sons”
sonship - in Paul’s time has greater privileges than that of daughters
In Christ - all men and women have equal privileges and blessings, as if they are all “sons”
baptism of the Holy Spirit puts us on the same level
“one” - sons
heirs - because you are sons
only the sons become heirs

rejoice in the truth that we are all One in Christ -
we are all sons of God
we are all “heirs” Abraham
we are all beneficiaries of God’s blessings
