Stay with Us

Last week we started our journey into the Emmaus Road episode.
This week we are going to finish that section and hopefully have some time for a bit of Q&A
Let’s go ahead and get going...
Luke 24:28–29 BE:NT
They drew near to the village where they were heading. Jesus gave the impression that he was going further, but they urged him strongly not to. ‘Stay with us,’ they said. ‘It’s nearly evening; the day is almost gone.’ And he went in to stay with them.
If you remember back, we are in the midst of the same day.
It has been a long day so far, but it is not over.
Luke 24:30–31 BE:NT
As he was sitting at table with them he took the bread and gave thanks. He broke it and gave it to them. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight.
Something in the breaking of the bread opened their eyes.
But, he is not an apparition, he was able to grasp bread and break it.
Luke 24:32 BE:NT
Then they said to each other, ‘Do you remember how our hearts were burning inside us, as he talked to us on the road, as he opened up the Bible for us?’
The “Bible” here is the Tanak, the Hebrew Bible.
But notice this, the sense they had that something was happening, something was different.
Remember, the day is late...
Luke 24:33–35 BE:NT
And they got up then and there and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven, and the people with them, gathered together. They were saying, ‘The Lord really has been raised! He’s appeared to Simon!’ Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.
So, the day is late, but they head back to Jerusalem.
This is why some think Emmaus was not seven miles away, but more like a 7 mile round trip.
As it turns out, Jesus is appearing to others too.
And it was the BREAKING of BREAD that seemed to be the revealing moment.
Luke 24:36–37 BE:NT
As they were saying this, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ They were terrified and alarmed, and thought they were seeing a ghost.
Now he shows up in the group!
Not the first time they thought he was a ghost.
Luke 24:38–39 BE:NT
‘Why are you so disturbed?’ he said. ‘Why do these questionings come up in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; it really is me, myself. Touch me and see! Ghosts don’t have flesh and bones like you can see I have.’
Again, he questions their questioning.
As if this is a just a normal day in the lives of these former fisherman, tax collectors, zealots, etc.
Yeah, everyone has experienced a dead man standing in their midst, yeah, that is normal!
Luke 24:40–43 BE:NT
With these words, he showed them his hands and feet. While they were still in disbelief and amazement from sheer joy, he said to them, ‘Have you got something here to eat?’ They gave him a piece of baked fish, which he took and ate in front of them.
Bread and fish…does that ring a bell?
And notice, they are providing for him, he is not providing for them.
Now, what DO YOU THINK THEY ARE THINKING?
Given what we know about this group, WHAT ARE THEY THINKING.
Now, He will stay with us
Now is the time.
Can you imagine what the priests and scribes and leaders will say when Jesus rolls into the temple to teach!
Can you imagine how Pilate is going to respond!
All those who doubted are going to bow the knee!
Now the KINGDOM will begin...
Before, they were missing him and in disbelief that he died.
Now, they have him back, but they don’t know yet he will disappear again.
And what happens after that?
We believe he was raised, and people will know that WHEN HE RETURNS.
All of this happens around a meal.
That is so important.
