The Acts
Written by Luke
It was intended to be part 2 of The Gospel according to Luke.
1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach,
2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had by the Holy Spirit given orders to the apostles whom He had chosen.
Luke is telling us that his accounts overlap.
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day,
47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
48 “You are witnesses of these things.
49 “And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
We see some more texture in Acts 1
3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of the things concerning the kingdom of God.
4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me;
5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
6 So when they had come together, they were asking Him, saying, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?”
They were getting inpatient.
David got impatient
2 How long, O Lord, will I call for help,
And You will not hear?
I cry out to You, “Violence!”
Yet You do not save.

3 How long shall the wicked, O Lord,
How long shall the wicked exult?
They had followed Jesus for over 3 years, expecting him to set up His Kingdom.
They watched him suffer, die, and be raised to life, and thought, “ok now He’s going to do it.”
They might not have been asking the right question, but they were asking the right person.
7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or epochs which the Father has fixed by His own authority;
8 but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
At first glance it looks like Jesus was just changing the subject.
Like if Martye asked me if I wanted to go antique shopping and I’m like, “hay look, that light bulb is out, I probably need to change that.
They were asking about Jesus fulfilling the Old Testament prophesy that said that the Messiah would establish God’s Kingdom among His chosen people.
and Jesus was like, “yeah, we don’t talk about times.... but look over here, see..........
That was not what Jesus was doing. He answered the question by changing the way they understood God’s Kingdom.
It was a paradigm shift.
They thought a Kingdom was territorial in nature.
He showed them that The Kingdom of God is at its core, spiritual in nature.
What is a Kingdom? It is a state or region that is ruled over by the power and authority of a King or Queen.
You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.
They thought the Kingdom was just in Isreal.
He showed them that the Kingdom of God is international in its membership.
They thought the Kingdom of God would come suddenly.
He showed them 1. Not be concerned with the timeline.
It is not for you to know....
And 2. that it would come on gradually.
even to the remotest part of the earth.
The Christian World View it the greatest paradigm shift there it.
It changes everything. Your goals, your focus. Your place in the world.
The Ascension
9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
10 And as they were gazing intently into the sky while He was going, behold, two men in white clothing stood beside them.
11 They also said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven.”

12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day’s journey away.

13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James.
14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.
John Calvin said the two essentials for true corporate prayer: 1. They were of one mind, 2. They were persistent.
Four things to do when God says, “wait.”
Trust God.
Worship God. With your words and your actions.
Learn to be content.
Pray.
