17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you. 20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord’s supper. 21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken. 22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not. 23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. 25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. 27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

Distinguishing between the holy and the mundane appears to be far more serious in biblical theology than can be appreciated by the present generation

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. 33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. 34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

Tonight we gather for the Lord’s Supper. We gather for worship.

What is worship?

When we treasuring the true beauty and glory of God.

The our outward forms of worship are the acts that show how much we treasure the wonder and glory of God.

Remembering His death until He comes is worship not a sacrament.

Sacrament - visible form of getting grace.

Next Sunday we will have a baptism. Tonight a Lord’s supper.

Hopefully throughout the week we have had many ways we have followed through with the command to wash one another's feet taking multiple forms of expression, through which members meet each other’s needs.

John 13:14–15 (KJV 1900)

14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.

Unlike baptism and the Supper, the washing of the saints’ feet carries no picture of the atonement

Tonight is one of the important and vital ways we work to make sure the Gospel is understand and shared from generation to generation until the Lord’s return

Tonight we will remember the cross by remembering how much it was an expression of love to us and that we were forgiven so much.

Forgiveness has “give” in the middle of it.

Grace gives what someone doesn’t deserve.

Forgiveness is not “getting” even. It is giving away the right to get even.

This is what we get through Christ for our sins.

If we believe in Christ, God no longer holds our sins against us.

All sin is serious, because it is against God

God’s law demanded a complete love for Him

But we have all loved other things more. This is what sin is—dishonoring God by preferring other things over him, and acting on those preferences

If God were not just, there would be no demand for his Son to suffer and die. And if God were not loving, there would be no willingness for his Son to suffer and die. But God is both just and loving. Therefore his love is willing to meet the demands of his justice.

We were cursed for not obeying the law.

The cursed belong on a cross. Why aren’t we there tonight?

Christ became our substitution.

The substitute, Jesus Christ, does not just cancel the wrath; he took it for us. He took it to the cross.

10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

We previously looked at the forgiveness of sin provided by Jesus.

Jesus took away our sin. Declared us innocent by Jesus’ atonement for our sin.

The guilt was real and not just felt. We needed an atonement.

4 And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

The cross also gives us a clear conscience.

14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

Just like the woman in this morning story we need to be declared saved and hear it

Problem of shame

goes all the way back to the garden

Animal sacrifice could do nothing pertaining to the conscience

Dead works. they make us feel hopeless in our consciences.

We are defiled by

pride

self-pity

bitterness

lust

envy

jealousy

covetousness

apathy

fear

When our conscience rises up and condemns us, where will we turn? We turn to cross.

Who can condemn us?

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Why is this the case?

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

Faith unites us to Christ so that his righteousness is counted as ours.

16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

Being “justified by faith” and being “justified by Christ” are parallel terms

17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

The world will bring its condemnation but we know that the highest court has already ruled in our favor.

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Our sin ruins us in two ways.

It makes us guilty before God,

It damns us with guilt, and it enslaves us to sin.

The blood of Jesus frees us from both miseries.
