The Holy and The Profane

Properly, whole, entire or perfect, in a moral sense. Hence, pure in heart; temper or dispositions; free from sin and sinful affections. Immaculate and complete in moral character; and man is more or less holy, as his heart is more or less sanctified, or purified from evil dispositions. We call a man holy, when his heart is conformed in some degree to the image of God, and his life is regulated by the divine precepts. Hence, holy is used as nearly synonymous with good, pious, godly.

2. Hallowed; consecrated or set apart to a sacred use, or to the service or worship of God

What is Profane? (we don’t get to choose)

From the root meaning, outside or before the temple

Obscene; heathenish; tending to bring reproach on religion, 7. To violate any thing sacred, or treat it with abuse, irreverence, or contempt. To pollute; to defile; to apply to temporal uses, To violate, To pollute to debase, To put to a wrong use.

Titus 1:15 NASB95

15 To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

Our God is the only holy God

Malachi 3:6 NASB95

6 “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.

The Bible talks about— The Holy One / The holy covenant / The holy people / The holy city / The holy place / His holy name / The holy land / The holy mountain / The Holy Spirit.

ALL other gods are unclean, unholy and profane

The worship of other gods, centers around immoral, unholy, unclean and perverse things.

All sin is profane, when we sin we bring shame on the holiness of God.

Proverbs 30:8–9 NASB95

8 Keep deception and lies far from me, Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, 9 That I not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.

All things close to God, are and must be Holy

The way to come into the presence of God in the past was only through the shed blood of an animal. Now we have a way through the precious blood of Jesus. Those who stand in His presence need to stand clean before Him.
