God wants us to have confidence for the day of judgment. When someone is appropriately confident, the confidence comes largely from the assessment that one is sufficiently prepared. As we see ourselves truly loving one another, that love proves that we have experienced the love of God in Christ, and that in that experience, we have sufficiently prepared for the examination of the day of judgment. That drives out our fear of judgment and produces a longing for that day.
