Devotion: John 20:21

John 20:21 NKJV
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
Overview of the Bible:

A.M.P.E.C.

ANTICIPATION

Anticipation (Genesis – Malachi)
· The entire OT is the anticipation of the coming of Jesus Christ.
o The recurring theme is ‘Someone’s coming…Someone’s coming…Someone’s coming…”.
o The OT contains prophecies that only Jesus can fill and problems only He will fix.
o It speaks of people who prefigure His coming and pictures that foreshadow His work.
§ It talks about a better prophet, a better priest, a better king, a better sacrifice
§ The OT anticipates Jesus!
o The whole OT anticipates someone coming.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation (Matthew – John)
· The One who was anticipated throughout the OT is manifested in the Gospels.
o “Someone’s coming…Someone’s coming…Someone’s coming…He’s here!”
o A reading of the Gospels quickly shows that these record the birth, life, teaching, miracles, death, burial, and resurrection of the One who was coming but is now here, Jesus Christ.
o The Gospels manifest Jesus.

PROCLAMATION

Proclamation (Acts)
· The one who was anticipated throughout the OT and manifested in the Gospels is proclaimed in the book of Acts.
Acts 1:8 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
o This book traces the growth of the early church and the proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
o In the book of Acts the early church proclaims Jesus!

EXPLANATION

Explanation (Romans – Jude)
· The One who was anticipated throughout the OT, manifested in the Gospels, and proclaimed in the book of Acts is explained in the epistles, Romans to Jude.
o These books were written to the churches and individuals, addressing pertinent needs, problems and questions.
o But, from a big picture perspective, these explain who Jesus Christ is, what He accomplished, and how His followers should live in light of those truths.
o The epistles explain the person and work of Jesus!

CONSUMMATION

Consummation (Revelation)
· Finally the One who was anticipated throughout the OT, manifested in the Gospels, proclaimed in the book of Acts, and explained in the epistles, is the One in whom all of God’s purposes for history will be consummated.
o To consummate means “to finish.”
o What God started in Genesis, He will finish in the book of Revelation. (Rev. 11:15).
Revelation 11:15 15 …"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he will reign for ever and ever."
o The Lord Jesus will return, the wicked will be judged, and the righteous will be blessed forevermore. The book of Revelation consummates all of history in Jesus!
THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS IS FOUND IN THE MANIFESTATION SECTION
THERE ARE 4 BOOKS IN THIS SECTION CALLED THE GOSPEL
THE MAIN THEME OF THIS SECTION IS THE AWAITED ONE, JESUS OR THE MESSIAH IS HERE!
THE BOOK WE ARE LOOKING AT TONIGHT IS

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO JOHN

THE BOOK PRESENTS Jesus as one sent by God the Father to be the Savior and He is the Son of God.
John brings eternal
significance to the story.
The Purpose OF THE BOOK IS FOUND IN
John 20:30–31 NKJV
And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

This Week’s Theme: Living in light of the Resurrection of Jesus

Memory Verse:
John 20:21 NKJV
So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”

Word for the Week: Peace - The state of harmony that is available to believers through having a right relationship with God and others and is especially associated with the presence of the Holy Spirit.

REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE

Ephesians 2:11 NKJV
Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands—

REMEMBER WHERE YOU WERE

Ephesians 2:12 NKJV
that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

KNOW WHERE YOU ARE

Ephesians 2:13 NKJV
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

CHRIST IS OUR PEACE

Ephesians 2:14 NKJV
For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,

PEACE WITH HUMANITY (JEW AND GENTILE)

Ephesians 2:15–16 NKJV
having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.
