Cliff: “may all the weird little facts that he knows be used in God’s service. . .”

Amex Platinum Card: once I accepted the card, I received a cardholder’s agreement explaining my obligations and what I can expect from Amex. I also received the book to explain the benefits.  Pictures of all the things I now have access to.

God has created a covenant: agreement with us. Gen. 17.4-9. (This is like the brochure for the card – gives you the high level benefits, but not much detail.)

Bible is the book explaining the benefits. No photos, but word pictures.

Hebrew names are a sentence with meaning: Zechariah = the Lord remembers. Zedekiah = the Lord is righteousness. Ezekiel = God strengthens. Isaiah = God is Salvation.

Exodus 3.13-14. “I AM” is an incomplete sentence; it begs for completion. Throughout the OT God reveals more of who he is by completing the sentence. Ultimately he is “I AM whatever you need.”

Seminary professor who ridiculed me: Your theology appears to be “Jesus will cure what ails you.”

Knowing more of God and his self revelation through his names allows you to pray more completely – to appropriate more and more of what God intends for you.

To book a great hotel through my platinum card I make a call. To claim God’s promises I call as well:

Old Testament New Testament
Jireh - Provider Gen 22:14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”
Matt 26:53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels?

Feeding the 5,000 and 4,000

Rohe - Shepherd

Ps 23:1 A Psalm of David. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.

M’Kadesh – Sanctification

Exod 31:13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
1 Cor 1:30 He is the source of your life in Christ Jesus, whom God made our wisdom and our righteousness and sanctification and redemption.

Tzidkenu – Righteousness

Jer 23:6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

Rapha – Healer

Exod 15:26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”
Matt 8:16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick,

Matt 9:35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Shalom – Peace

Judg 6:24 So Gideon built an altar there to the Lord, and called it The-Lord-Is-Peace. To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.
Eph 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation,
Eph 2:15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,

Shamah – Present/with me

Ezek 48:35 All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE.
Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Not Just an Old Testament covenant: review the NT expressions of God in the person of Jesus.
