Intro: We’re back in 2 Samuel we’ve been following the life of one of the greatest men in all the Bible…King David…now with that said, we are portion of his life where If David Public Image consultant, they would go to great lengths to bury these records…Because it’s been full of David’s Failure’s as a King, as a Father, and as a Man of God...
This testifies to the authenticity of Bible…It is brutally honest honest with it’s Hero’s
Abraham struggled to protect his wife
Moses was a killer
Paul had
Jacob played favorites with his kids
Samuel wasn’t the best dad in the world
And David pretty much all of those things going on
And Yet God would use them greatly...
1 Corinthians 1:28 ESV
28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,
1 Corinthians 1:27 ESV
27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;

1 Corinthians 1:27–28 ESV
27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are,
and last week we between Israel led by Absalom and David’s men which resulted in Absalom’s death...
and last week we witnessed a war between Israel led by Absalom and David’s men which resulted in Absalom’s death...
and last week we between Israel led by Absalom and David’s men which resulted in Absalom’s death...
On hearing the news about Absalom we read this...
2 Samuel 18:33 ESV
33 And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, “O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
2 sam :
So here we have the scene, David has gone from exiled King to grieving Father...
He was grieving because as wicked as Absalom was he was still David’s son, and now matter how far our kids wonder, no matter deep their decent…their still our kids and their is a larger portion of our hearts that they take with them on their journey
He was grieving because He knew that his sin was the soil in which Absalom’s sin and eventual would come out of....
With all that said, Absalom is dead, and now it’s time for the David to return to Jerusalem and to his throne
(Prop) Today we’re gonna follow this passage in 2 movments
We’re gonna talk about the King’s grief v.1-7
We’re gonna talk about the King’s graciousness v.8-15

A picture of grief v.1-7

2 Samuel 19:1–7 ESV
1 It was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.” 2 So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.” 3 And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle. 4 The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!” 5 Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, “You have today covered with shame the faces of all your servants, who have this day saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters and the lives of your wives and your concubines, 6 because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. For you have made it clear today that commanders and servants are nothing to you, for today I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then you would be pleased. 7 Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the Lord, if you do not go, not a man will stay with you this night, and this will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”
2 Samuel 19:1 ESV
1 It was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.”
So Let’s talk about Joab for a second, because he’s had a lot to do with whats going on here…as he’s the reason Absalom came back, and he’s the one who killed Absalom
Joab is David’s complicated Nephew and it’s hard to get a gage on him, he’s has a heart thats loyal to David one min and then in the next he’s proving himself to disloyal and unpredictable...
And He showed himself more unpredictable by killing absalom even after David clearly said “Deal gently with Absalom”
Here’s a question: Why did he do that?…the more I’ve thought about it the more I realized their was a point of change in Joab relationship with David
Here’s the point...
2 Samuel 11:14–15 ESV
14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah. 15 In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die.”
2 sam 11:14
He knew something about David that possibly no one but the Lord and those two mean knew…David sent orders to Joab for the Murder of Uriah the Husband of Bathsheba
I believe this changed the way Joab looked at David
App: The Effects of sin are so much greater then you could ever imagine...
So lets read all of this again...
2 sam 19:
So after receiving the news about the kings about the king’s great grief, so he goes up to the chamber where David was mourning and He doesn’t console him, he actually rebukes him…His grief was having an adverse effect on the people...
This speaks to us about 2 things

As the Leader goes…the People go

2 Samuel 19:2 ESV
2 So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.”
2 Samuel 19:2–3 ESV
2 So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.” 3 And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle.
2 SAM 19:
2 sam 19:4
You know, Joab could have been grieving and this wouldn’t have happened, Abishi could have been grieving and this wouldn’t have happened…but David’s grief changed an entire nation
This makes me think of Harod chapter 2 when he heard news about Jesus’ birth
Th
Matthew 2:3 ESV
3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;
We see it…as the leader goes…so does the people
Wether it’s a business, a church, a family, if the Leader is the troubled, those under him or her will be as well.
App: Pray for your leaders
Help them
Minister to your leaders
App: If your a leader your spiritual and emotional health is important…so we must do what needs to be done try and address the issue
Because David was so strong and brilliant in the art of war
Be honest
Let’s pick it
Be around people who can speak into your life help you see your blindspots
Here’s the 2nd thing...
2 Samuel 19:3–7 ESV
3 And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle. Grief

Grief is a powerful thing

David’s grief changed his men’s victory into mourning v.2
David’s grief alienated him from those who loved him and were there to help him v.5, 6,
David’s grief was gonna cause issues in the future v.7
This portion talks to us about the power of grief…so we’re gonna talk about grief for a min

Grief is natural and at times appropriate

The Ability to grieve is a part of being made in the image of God…
Jesus was grieved of Lazarus, he wept over the Jerusalem
To grieve and Mourn to is human
There are obvious seasons where grief is not only human it’s needed...
Ecclesiastes 3:4 ESV
4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
“God didn’t create the tear duct to simply moisten the eye…but as a release valve for the heart”

Excessive grief can be unhealthy

David was greiving an inappropriate amount for Absalom considering the circumstances…and it had become detrimental for those around him...
Great example of this is Samuel
1 Samuel 16:1 ESV
1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.”
Notice that God didn’t say “why are you crying”…he simply said…it’s time to stop crying…because I’m not done with you
You might say that a part of Samuel’s grief would have kept bound to that moment, never moving forward…But God said…It’s time to move forward
It’s not about being fake about your feelings…it’s about not being enslaved to them

Some wisdom for those who are grieving

I am leery whenever we talk about things like this some of you have lost very close loved one…
but here’s the a few wisdom pieces on this...

Give yourself time to grieve

I’ve seen some do this naturally, and I’ve seen others throw themselves into the next new thing…which doesn’t cure the grief, it just covers the grief and when it boils to the surface it’s 10 times more passionate

Find comfort in God’s promises

The bible says believers who we’ve lost can grieve with hope
The bible says believers who we’ve lost can grieve with hope
Jesus never said we would be shielded from things like pain, sickness, loss…He said he would overcome them...
1 Thessalonians 4:13 ESV
13 But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
It’s Human to mourn, it’s human, to cry, but as christians, we don’t mourn the way the world mourns…we grieve with hope
Our hope Is Jesus Christ and his resurrection
Here’s Paul talking about Jesus’ resurrection and what that means for those who have put their faith in Jesus for salvation...
1 Corinthians 15:20–23 ESV
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.
Losing someone on this side of eternity must be the single most painful event one can experience…but the sting of that loss
How do you deal with grief?
Be honest about it
Some people are struggling
“Some Christians sorrow at times in death and tragedy like those who have no hope in God and this is a wrong thing to do. If your dear one’s are dead, you can not restore them to life by your unbelief, and if they still survive, it would be a pity to be downcast and unbelieving when there is no occasion for it. your strength is to sit still, remember you are a Christian and a Christian is expected to be more self possessed than those who have no God to fly too.”

Comfort others

Let God redeem that lost or that tragedy by now using it as a launching board to ministry to others...
2 Corinthians 1:3–5 ESV
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.
2 cor 1:3-

Utilize others

Utilize others
Understand you that don’t need to just be on the giving end…you need to receive as well
Understand that it would be the perspective of another that would help David out of this hole
Times of introspection are good…but Isolation is dangerous
Your gonna need people with wisdom, and love, who can help you through
Seek professional help if needed
This is for those in a position of leadership

Remember your attitude can effect others

Here we see that David’s discouragement spread like wild fire amongst the people
Remember the 12 spies who went in to spy out the promise land? Number 12-13
Greg Rhodes - It’s alright to show people your heart…you just can’t bleed all over them
“Happiness” or “heaviness” is a choice
1 Thessalonians 4:3–4 ESV
3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4 that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor,
You posses your own body Thess 4:3
You can know all the promises, have all the encouragement, have all the tools of recovery…but at the end of the day....You’re gonna need to make the choice
You chose today...
So what doe’s Joab tell David to do?
2 Samuel 19:7 ESV
7 Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the Lord, if you do not go, not a man will stay with you this night, and this will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”
2 sam 19:
Grief is real, grief is human, there are season for grief…but sooner of later…you have to arise…For you family, for those looking up to you, because for the deliver death don’t have the final say
look at verse 8
2 Samuel 19:8 ESV
8 Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.
This action signals David’s resuming his kingly duties, as gateways were frequently the place where official duties were performed. and what we see here is that he so really needed to get his head straight asap…because there was a massive fracture between David’s men and the rest of Israel who followed Absalom…they needed the king to be at his best...
We’re gonna talk about the King’s graciousness v.8-15

A picture of grace v.8-15

So now this picks up on a argument taking place back in Jerusalem…amoungst the people...
2 Samuel 18:9–10 ESV
9 And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak, and his head caught fast in the oak, and he was suspended between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on. 10 And a certain man saw it and told Joab, “Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.”
2 sam 19:9-10
2 Samuel 19:9–10 ESV
9 And all the people were arguing throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies and saved us from the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom. 10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”
2 sam 18:9
So there was a debate was a debate raging amoungst the tribes who have followed Absalom and it was pretty much this “We’re reluctant to follow the king that we’ve known and rejected…but the new king that we’ve embraced is dead
And I think that is a pretty good picture of whats happened in the west
This strikes me. because i think about where we are in society specifically progressive western though We live in a day and age where the word “authority” is not a welcome word amoungst those who are progressive thinkers…it speaks of abuse, suppression, and a lack of freedom…
For many years theres been a moving away from religion and the whole concept of Authority in general because it was seem as suffocating and oppressive…which at times it has been
and that might be because there have been so many in authority have abused their authority
And freedom and individuality had become the new thing championed
But this hasn’t fixed anything
People are still Anxious
People are still disconnected and lonley
Escapism is on the rise
So in other words, this idealized utopia that would come about once everybody broke free of the confined of religion and tradition and just started thinking for themselves has come and it hasn’t fixed anyone
In other words…the king is dead
Here’s the point: Even these Israelites, who had just finished fighting with David…realized that they were much better off coming back under his authority then leading themselves…and so are you
You were never meant to lead yourself through this life and the next…because you don’t have the authority or the experience
Don’t be repulse about the idea of authority…because there will be times where charting your own course just isn’t helpful
Illustration: The first time you came to this church…how did you find it? - you didn’t just feel your way here right? you went on the website and trusted in the authority of it
Jesus does
Illastration: If we’re climbing Mt Everest…You wouldn’t just follow your heart on that right? you would follow your chirp-a and you follow to the tee…because you don’t want to die
Jesus in the bible shows himself as the ultimate authority...
Jesus lived a sinless life
But it’s just not true
Jesus died and rose again
He died for us
The bible says at the end of human history all the earth will acknowledge that Jesus is the authority
Illastration: If we’re climbing Mt Everest…You wouldn’t just follow your heart on that right? you would follow your chirp-a and you follow to the tee…because you don’t want to die

So they recognize their need for King David which is a good first step…but their the’ve been at war with the king…So how will the king respond?
2 Samuel 19:11–15 ESV
11 And King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king? 12 You are my brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’ 13 And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if you are not commander of my army from now on in place of Joab.’ ” 14 And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, “Return, both you and all your servants.” 15 So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan.

I want you to notice a few things here...

I want you to notice a few things here...
David could have forced his reign upon his enemies though he was certainly capable but he didn’t…he gave them a choice
David could have put to death Amasa (the former commander of Absalom’s army 2 sam 17:25)…but instead he gives a premier place in his army
David chose to identify himself with them when he could have just killed them
This is called Grace…and this is a picture of Jesus deals with us...
And His grace swayed their hearts v.14
And His grace swayed their hearts v.14
And this is so much like Jesus...
Jesus will never force himself on any of us…Salvation is a matter of a man or women willingly bowing their hearts to Jesus…Just as David
Jesus will never force himself on any of us…Salvation is a matter of a man or women willingly bowing their hearts to Jesus…people who’s hearts are swayed by Jesus...
Allen Redpath said this...
“David didn’t lift a finger to reestablish his authority, His return to sovereignty was decided by the voluntary submission of his kinsmen and their loving obedience to his will”
What a great picture of King Jesus
And Just as David swayed the people’s heart with his graciousness…Jesus swayed us with his graciousness
William Blakey said this...
“Most probably the reason why the men of Judah hung back in summiting to David was because they feared the fact that if David was restored to the throne he would kill them for treason, for it was at Hebron that Absalom was promoted and that was Judah’s territory. But when word began to speared that the leader (Amasa) of the rebel forces was not punished but actually promoted to the office of the King’s highest service, all fears of the sort began to be scattered. It was an act of wonderful clemency, it was not usually the way a king would treat rebels…but this was no common king. There was no limit to his generosity, where sin abounded grace dId much more abound. and all of this grace lead them to say “Return now, and claim your throne”
Conclusion:
This is why Jesus is my king…because there’s no greater
Share my testimony
Who is this Amasa guy? he was the head of Israel’s forces under Ablalom
2 Samuel 17:25 ESV
25 Now Absalom had set Amasa over the army instead of Joab. Amasa was the son of a man named Ithra the Ishmaelite, who had married Abigal the daughter of Nahash, sister of Zeruiah, Joab’s mother.
Now, here’s David saying…I know you had set yourself up to be my enemy…I know you were under the authority of the dead king Absalom…Amasa was probably thinking “He’s gonna kill me” when he comes before David…David says “I don’t want to kill you…I want you with me”
Notice he his relationship with them as “Bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh v.12, 13 This is David Identifying himself with his enemies
And David would take the former commander of his enemy and
Here’s the question other king in history showed such mercy with his enemies that he was willing to identify himself with them…only Jesus
