Title: Real-lationships
In our social media driven culture, it’s easy to have many connections but no real relationship.
Jesus quotes Isaiah...
I
The people of Jesus day would say they had a relationship with God, but really they just knew about God.
Knowing about someone and knowing someone are different.
Examine how we can have Real Relationships that will last!
1. Have Boundaries
“Boundaries define us.
They define what is me and what is not me.
A boundary shows me where I end and someone else begins, leading me to sense of ownership.”
- Boundaries, Dr. Henry Cloud & Dr. John Townsend
Define Your Relationship
“I’m glad we have so much in common, especially our epic ability to slay in Fortnite.”
Establish Boundaries
“We should play online three times a week.
Let’s start next Saturday.”
specific time & place is established
without proper and specific boundaries, someone may come on too strong or not strong enough in the relationship
Reinforce Limitations
“I’m sorry I can’t play four times a week, my parents only allow me three times a week.”
we all forget sometimes; it’s okay to remind people of your limitations
Maintain Boundaries
“We will have to accomplish the mission next week when I can’t get back online.”
the moment that your boundaries are broken or flexed, they will not be the same until you re-establish them
2. Assume Positive Intent
As humans, our sin nature makes us want to question everything
Adam and Eve in the garden with the serpent, “Did God really say?”
Negative intent creates:
Gossip
Bad Thoughts
Jealousy
Jealousy
Positive intent creates:
Trust
Confidence
Opportunity
Romans 12:16-18
Positive intent at Apple
Apple Positive Intent - repairs on damaged devices
3. Love Like You’ve Never Been Hurt
- repairs on damaged devices
says, “love never ends”
that means, no matter what road blocks or detours come in your relationship we are called to love!
What does this mean?
You continue to love that person
You do not need to keep them close in your life
By loving someone, you are ultimately pointing them back to Jesus
If someone is in Christ they should be active in the ministry (service) of reconciliation
But, you don’t understand...
I don’t understand how a jacked up sinner like myself could still be loved by a God who has never done anything wrong.
What I know, is that He told me to love like He first loved me!
It Takes Time
Hurt doesn’t happen overnight and love to overcome it wont be fulfilled overnight.
broken trust takes time to mend itself
It’s going to take time - but there’s no limit to how long you are to love others.
You Won’t Forget, but you can Remember Differently
Joseph and his brothers reconcile
God is able to use something bad for our good!
God is able to use pain to grow us!
4. Serve Others First
Colossians 3:23-24
When you serve others, you are ultimately serving God!
Jesus Washes the Disciples Feet
Foot washing was the duty of the lowest servant in the house
He rose from dinner - got uncomfortable
Laid aside his garments - this wasn’t about His position
He prepared the water and took a towel
Jesus could’ve had a servant prep the water, and simply wiped a couple dirty feet to give the “image of a servant”
Instead, Jesus was a complete servant!
This was an extreme act of servanthood.
According to the Jewish laws and traditions regarding the relationship between a teacher and his disciples, a teacher had no right to demand or expect that his disciples would wash his feet.
How much more unthinkable was it that the Master would wash His disciple’s feet?
Serving Others Practically
Help Your Family (chores for money doesn’t count)
Send an encouraging note to someone (leave it in their locker)
Listen (don’t always be the one talking)
Ask God for opportunities to serve
