Passage: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
(28) So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!

TITLE: Deceive to Achieve
“Fake it till you Make it!
This phrase is known in our culture as to suggest that by imitating .....
..... confidence,
..... competence and
..... an optimistic mind set,
a person can realize those qualities in their real life.
It’s believed that if you do something 13 times in a row it will become a habit.
EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE:
Act like a good person/ you become a good person
Act like an optimistic person/ you become an optimistic person
Personally speaking, I am not sure I buy into this philosophy.
I am not sure that just because you ACT like something you are or will become that something.
There was a movie out a few years ago, “Catch Me If You Can” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
This was based on true story.
About a man named “Frank W Abagnale Jr.”
Left home at the age of 16
Didn’t have a High School diploma
Before the age of 21 he had passed himself off as a Pilot, Lawyer, Doctor and a professor at a University.
All while cashing in millions of Dollars in Fraudulent Checks
He didn’t “fake it till he made it!”
What I mean is, by him faking to be the pilot, lawyer, doctor, or professor, he didn’t then become a qualified Pilot, layer, doctor or professor.
What he did do though is ........ “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
He deceived people, banks and institutions in order to achieve in life!
(Money, Positions)
He tells of the reason for the deception was to “Survive” but after a period of time I would say he “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
He tells of the reason for the deception was to “Survive” but after a period of time I would say he “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
Deception can be simply defined as ......
An attempt to appear to be what you are not!
Transition Statement: I am sure we all have done this at some point in our life.
WE:
I remember as a teenager I tried to act .....
..... cooler than what I was.
..... more popular than what I was.
..... more athletic than what I was.
..... more like a bad boy than what I was.
All of us can probably relate to this! ......... WHY did we do this?
For me it probably was because of some girl I wanted to impress or a bunch of my guy friend who I wanted to impress.
I was “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE.”
As Adults we might find ourselves doing this ..... for a raise or a position in the company!
Trying to impress the bosses ..... Staying late, coming in early, all to deceive in order to achieve!
I have heard stories of ladies who would try to flirt with the policeman who pulled her over for speeding.
Pretending to like them in order to get out of a ticket.
“DECEIVE to ACHIEVE.”
I am not saying that all of this is going to cause us to miss out on heaven.
(Not going to hell because of it)!
I “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE” something when I was a youth pastor in VA.
Share the story about me and the water guns!
I “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
I would be safe to say, most of the time, “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE” something in life is not how God would want us to go about it!
GOD:
Transition Statement: God must have known we would all struggle with this because, in God’s word, Jesus addresses this very issue with the Pharisees and Scribes.
“DECEIVING to ACHIEVE.”
GOD:
In this is what Jesus was calling the Pharisees and Scribes out on.
(Lets take a look!)
Opening remarks sound the same, “Woe to you …” This is the 6th Woe!
“You are like” - Jesus is comparing them to something.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
The Greek work give them about an intensity to this phrase.
It brings about a sense of ..... “There is no doubt about it!”
“Whitewashed Tombs” -
What are they?
Certain tombs were marked with this liquified/plaster like substance.
This was a sign that these tombs were occupied with a dead person.
These tombs are flat to the ground
Beautifully painted on the outside but full of uncleanliness on the inside.
The jews had a tradition that on the 25th of every month they would paint these tombs.
When jesus was speaking to the Pharisees and Scribes, the Passover was approaching and the tombs were painted for this event as well.
Jews were so concerned about outward purity they didn’t not want to come into contact and become unclean.
(7 Day process to be classified as clean again.)
Jesus is telling the pharisees and scribes, “You are like this ..... no doubt about it!”
In case they didn’t get or understand what was being said to them, Jesus explains it to them in verse 28.
“you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.”
They were ....... “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE”
Attempting to appear to be what they were not!
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version.
(2016).
().
Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bible
They were unclean on the inside!
What made them unclean?
This is what Jesus was explaining to them.
“Hypocrisy and Lawlessness”
Lets take a look at these 2 things!
Hypocrisy: This english word is translated 8 times in this Chapter!
7 out of the 8 times the Greek word is meaning “GODLESS”!
The other time there is a different Greek word used ..... which it means “to create a public impression that is at odds with a persons real purpose or motivation” : DONE FOR OUTWARD SHOW! (This word is found in verse 28!)
Lawlessness: Its not meaning the absence of the law.
(Oh, my bad, I forgot it!)
