TITLE: Deceive to Achieve
Fake it till you Make it!
This phrase is known in our culture as to suggest that by imitating .....
..... confidence,
..... competence and
..... an optimistic mind set,
a person can realize those qualities in their real life.
It’s believed that if you do something 13 times in a row it will become a habit.
EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE:
Act like a good person/ you become a good person
Act like an optimistic person/ you become an optimistic person
Personally speaking, I am not sure I buy into this philosophy.
I am not sure that just because you ACT like something you are or will become that something.
There was a movie out a few years ago, “Catch Me If You Can” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
This was based on true story.
About a man named “Frank W Abagnale Jr.”
Left home at the age of 16
Didn’t have a High School diploma
Before the age of 21 he had passed himself off as a Pilot, Lawyer, Doctor and a professor at a University.
All while cashing in millions of Dollars in Fraudulent Checks
He didn’t “fake it till he made it!”
What I mean is, by him faking to be the pilot, lawyer, doctor, or professor, he didn’t then become a qualified Pilot, layer, doctor or professor.
What he did do though is ........ “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
He deceived people, banks and institutions in order to achieve in life! (Money, Positions)
He tells of the reason for the deception was to “Survive” but after a period of time I would say he “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
He tells of the reason for the deception was to “Survive” but after a period of time I would say he “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
Deception can be simply defined as ...... An attempt to appear to be what you are not!
Transition Statement: I am sure we all have done this at some point in our life.

WE:

I remember as a teenager I tried to act .....
..... cooler than what I was.
..... more popular than what I was.
..... more athletic than what I was.
..... more like a bad boy than what I was.
All of us can probably relate to this! ......... WHY did we do this?
For me it probably was because of some girl I wanted to impress or a bunch of my guy friend who I wanted to impress.
I was “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE.”
As Adults we might find ourselves doing this ..... for a raise or a position in the company!
Trying to impress the bosses ..... Staying late, coming in early, all to deceive in order to achieve!
I have heard stories of ladies who would try to flirt with the policeman who pulled her over for speeding.
Pretending to like them in order to get out of a ticket. “DECEIVE to ACHIEVE.”
I am not saying that all of this is going to cause us to miss out on heaven. (Not going to hell because of it)!
I “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE” something when I was a youth pastor in VA.
Share the story about me and the water guns!
I “DECEIVED to ACHIEVE.”
I would be safe to say, most of the time, “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE” something in life is not how God would want us to go about it!
GOD:
Transition Statement: God must have known we would all struggle with this because, in God’s word, Jesus addresses this very issue with the Pharisees and Scribes. “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE.”
GOD:
In this is what Jesus was calling the Pharisees and Scribes out on. (Lets take a look!)
Opening remarks sound the same, “Woe to you …” This is the 6th Woe!
You are like” - Jesus is comparing them to something.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.

28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

The Greek work give them about an intensity to this phrase.
It brings about a sense of ..... “There is no doubt about it!”
“Whitewashed Tombs” -
What are they?
Certain tombs were marked with this liquified/plaster like substance.
This was a sign that these tombs were occupied with a dead person.
These tombs are flat to the ground
Beautifully painted on the outside but full of uncleanliness on the inside.
The jews had a tradition that on the 25th of every month they would paint these tombs.
When jesus was speaking to the Pharisees and Scribes, the Passover was approaching and the tombs were painted for this event as well.
Jews were so concerned about outward purity they didn’t not want to come into contact and become unclean. (7 Day process to be classified as clean again.)
Jesus is telling the pharisees and scribes, “You are like this ..... no doubt about it!”
In case they didn’t get or understand what was being said to them, Jesus explains it to them in verse 28.
you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
They were ....... “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE
Attempting to appear to be what they were not!
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bible
They were unclean on the inside!
What made them unclean?
This is what Jesus was explaining to them.
“Hypocrisy and Lawlessness”
Lets take a look at these 2 things!
Hypocrisy: This english word is translated 8 times in this Chapter!
7 out of the 8 times the Greek word is meaning “GODLESS”!
The other time there is a different Greek word used ..... which it means “to create a public impression that is at odds with a persons real purpose or motivation” : DONE FOR OUTWARD SHOW! (This word is found in verse 28!)
Lawlessness: Its not meaning the absence of the law. (Oh, my bad, I forgot it!)
It means the willingness to do what they know is against the known law of God.
What were they doing?
DECEIVING to ACHIEVE
You might be asking, what were they trying to achieve?
What they were trying to achieve was not a godly thing but a worldly thing .....
Status, reputation, viewed as Holy and Righteous.
What they were thinking was they could ....... “Fake it till they made it!”
Turn to you neighbor on your right and say, “I’m glad I am not like them!”
Turn to you neighbor on your right and say, “I’m glad I am not like them!”
We really didn’t say that, did we?
Transition Statement: I bet if we think long enough we might be reminded of a time when we actually tried to “DECEIVED in order to ACHIEVE
We might even be STILL DOING IT TODAY!

YOU:

Remember, deceiving is the attempt to appear to be what you are not!
I am attempting to appear to be a good man but behind closed doors/when no one is looking ...... (I want to achieve status, reputation)
I am attempting to appear to be a good husband but behind closed doors I am looking at Porn, lusting after women .... (I want to achieve a happy, healthy marriage)
FB appearance .......
I am attempting to appear to be an excellent employee but behind the bosses back .......
I am attempting to appear to be a kind/loving/caring friend ......
Let’s ask the question, “What negative affect would this have?”
If I was “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE” something, what negative affect would this have .....
.... On my family? Making mini me’s
.... on my marriage? Divorce
.... on my job? Lose my Job
.... on my friendships? Could be a lonely person
Better yet, “WHAT NEGATIVE AFFECT WOULD THIS HAVE ON MY RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD?”
PAUSE:
The pharisees desired to be viewed as Holy/Righteous but became unwilling to do what was required to be holy/righteous.
They were going to FAKE IT TILL THEY MADE IT.
So what happen to them while they were “Faking it till them made it?”
Hypocritical - Putting on a show, hoping no one would notice.
Lawless - more concerned about being “POLITICALLY” correct than biblically correct.
What were they doing - “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE
WE:
I have to admit, the philosophy “Fake it till you make it” was something I tried to live for a while.
Not in my walk with God but when I was not a follower of Christ.
I squeezed by in High School - Graduating “Thank you Lordly”
Entered College and graduated with an Associate degree. - I tried to fake it till I made it.
It wasn’t until I found Jesus did I realize what I was doing and decided to change.
No more pretending to be something I wasn’t. Status .... Reputation
Became more concerned about what God thought than what the world thought!
No more “DECEIVING to ACHIEVE
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness.
28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
I decided I was no longer going to act .......... I was going to become genuine and real!
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
I have to believe there are some here this morning who can relate to this.
You have been so concerned about what others think (acting one way to be perceived) about you all they while knowing what is right to do but not doing it.
DECEIVING to ACHIEVE
I wonder if there might be someone here this morning who can relate to this?
But what would it look like if we decided today that we are no longer going to “Fake it till me make it.”
You have been faking it, but you keep falling short of making it!
You wake up every morning saying to your self, I am going to be better, act nicer, be kinder, love unconditionally.
I am not going to be angry, hateful, curse, or think ill of people.
You have that smile on your face as people walk by,
..... but inside you still have all those ungodly things that keep haunting you.
What if I told you today, you don’t have to live like this any more!
You can live a life that is free from all of this! No more hiding it because its gone!
No longer ACTING like a good person - you become that person and live it out for others to see.
No longer ACTING like an optimistic person - you become that person and live it out for others to see.
What if told you Jesus wants to do this in your life? NOW!
The reason Jesus was revealing this to the Pharisees and scribes was so they would change.
I believe the reason Jesus is revealing this to us today is so we can change!
