Journey Focused

INTRODUCTION
As ISIS has been pushed out - many who witnessed their horror have become Christians. They lose their family, job and break the law. They turn looking for hope from the legalism and hate of Islam. But it is not the easy choice- the lose everything to follow Jesus.
Fix. your eyes on Jesus.
Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

John 7:1–24 ESV
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” For not even his brothers believed in him. Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. You go up to the feast. I am not going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” After saying this, he remained in Galilee. But after his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not publicly but in private. The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, “Where is he?” And there was much muttering about him among the people. While some said, “He is a good man,” others said, “No, he is leading the people astray.” Yet for fear of the Jews no one spoke openly of him. About the middle of the feast Jesus went up into the temple and began teaching. The Jews therefore marveled, saying, “How is it that this man has learning, when he has never studied?” So Jesus answered them, “My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me. If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. The one who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory; but the one who seeks the glory of him who sent him is true, and in him there is no falsehood. Has not Moses given you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?” The crowd answered, “You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill you?” Jesus answered them, “I did one work, and you all marvel at it. Moses gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man’s whole body well? Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

3 Ways We Stay Focused in Conflict

I. Please God Only (1-9)

Please God or man. You can't do both.
4 Groups That Rejected Jesus

1. Jesus was Rejected by His Friends (1-2)

Last week- disciples (not the 12) left him.
John 6:66 ESV
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him.

2. Jesus was Rejected by His Family (3-5)

Jesus was hurting their honor within their community. They called him to go to Judea to show them his works.
Mark 3:21 ESV
And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.”
Mark 3:31–35 ESV
And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.” And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”
Luke 12:49–53 ESV
“I came to cast fire on the earth, and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how great is my distress until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

3. Jesus was Rejected by the World (6-9)

Secular Worldly System
Secularism- rejects the Church.
Romans 8:8 ESV
Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

4. Jesus was Rejected by the Religious Establishment (10-13)

The Jews= in John many times it is a name given to the Religious System.
As a pastor- this is hard- It's where recognition and approval comes from. Also- legitimacy and bigger churches.

II. Reflect God Only (16-18)

3 Ways we Speak for God

1. Speak for God (16)

We are his heralds.
- Preacher= Greek word "Herald"
2 Timothy 1:11 ESV
for which I was appointed a preacher and apostle and teacher,
Mark 16:15 ESV
And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
We are called to be God's heralds.

2. Do God's Will (17)

When it isn't about us and our reputation or fame we can discern God's Will.
Our own agenda keeps us from seeing God's Will.
When it is about us- it can't be about God.

3. Glorify God (18)

Pharisees taught under authority of their Rabbi who earned the right to be quoted. Only those who were experts in the authority of their Rabbi could begin to teach in their own authority.
Jesus taught under God's authority.
Philippians 2:5–8 ESV
Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
He humbled self to be one under the authority of another.
How much more should we?
Glory= manifest presence- whose presence is realized when you do good works?

III. Obey God Only (19-24)

God Only Has Authority to Judge (19)
He is greater than we can comprehend (21)
He Has Right to Heal on Sabbath (22-23) - Grace over Law
Goes back to Jesus healing man at Pool of Bethesda ()
Judge Spiritually, not Physically. (24)
Do you see physically or spiritually?
CONCLUSION
The only way to stay focused during the journey is to see the way God sees.
God judges with right judgment because He judges with Truth.
Are you ready for God's judgment?
Are you on the journey that he desires for your life?
