Intro -
He continues:
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
This is or should be very familiar to all of us.
If we confess our sins, confess is homologeō in Greek. A combination word, homo is same and logeo is word. So to say the same thing regarding our Sin. That our job. Now Jesus takes over.
What does that mean if we refuse to call Sin SIN? We must call it what it is.
Our Flesh wants to make us look better than we are.
He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us,
He is faithful and just - “is”is the verb here and again in the present indicative, so he is continues to be “Faithful and Just”.
does it mean to be faithful? Just?
Just is in a wide sense, upright, righteous, virtuous, keeping the commands of God.
Faithful is of persons who show themselves faithful in the transaction of business, the execution of commands, or the discharge of official duties.
Only God is continuously faithful and just.
“to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us” ...
The Greek is in what is called an aorist subjunctive meaning “if we- then he” immediately ( aorist is a punticular action) forgives us and cleanses us from all unrighteousness. As soon as we confess He has already forgiven.
Cleanses is the Greek word katharizō . The root of our words like catheter.
“from all unrighteousness.” All is the operative word here. It means - each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything.
unrighteousness here is adikia . It is the Greek negative added to righteousness. In other words all things not righteous.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
Verse 10 is a mirror of verse 8. If we say that we have not sinned, have not sinned is in a Perfect tense. Its saying I have not nor never have been a sinner. The result, we make Him a liar, that is we continuously call Him a liar. It is saying your sacrifice on the cross “means nothing to me”. I don’t need forgiveness. The result, His word is not in us. Jesus would say I never new you.
The reality is is that if we know Him we could not make such a statement.
2: 1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
John likes the term for little children teknion. We need more spiritual fathers today.
So what is John’s stated purpose for writing these things? that you may not sin. He continues, “But if you do...” And if anyone sins, why des he say that? He knows we will.
So if we do sin we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
What does an Advocate do? Defense attorney.
Advocate is paraklētos . This is the same word used of the Holy Spirit and it means one who comes along side, a helper, or comforter.
Father is patēr.
Jesus Christ the righteous. Iēsous Christos dikaios . Jesus is the only righteous one!
