David realizes that it wasn’t anybody else but his own decisions that have put him in this predicament.

David opens this Psalm with a cry/confession
I know He love’s me because He’s shown me abundant mercy.
He got in the way of me getting what i deserved.

Wash me thoroughly - Stop “Washing Up”
Take it away. Remove It.
David is convicted by his sin. - Some of us need to allow the spirit of God convict us.
We want the comfort of our compromise without the consequence of our choices.
David realizes that it wasn’t anybody else but his own decisions that have put him in this predicament. (v.3)

The reason you world is so chaotic is because of your choices.

You’ve been trying to come out on your own but you find yourself in the same cycle.
Romans 7:19–25 The Message
19 I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it; I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway. 20 My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions. Something has gone wrong deep within me and gets the better of me every time. 21 It happens so regularly that it’s predictable. The moment I decide to do good, sin is there to trip me up. 22 I truly delight in God’s commands, 23 but it’s pretty obvious that not all of me joins in that delight. Parts of me covertly rebel, and just when I least expect it, they take charge. 24 I’ve tried everything and nothing helps. I’m at the end of my rope. Is there no one who can do anything for me? Isn’t that the real question? 25 The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does. He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind, but am pulled by the influence of sin to do something totally different.

David makes a plea to be purged.

7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Psalm 51:7
Purge me with hyssop - Hyssop branches were used by the Israelites during the time of passover. They would use the hyssop to apply the blood on their doorpost so that the death angel would pass over there home.
Allow me to suggest that David must have had this image in his mind and is basically saying. God I need to be covered.
Is there in the congregation says if im going to get out of this i need you to cover me.
The branches were also used in different purification rituals.
If you purge me,
David is saying if there is anything thats not like you. I need it gone.
Psalm 51:10 ESV
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
This is a heart issue.
May we consider that developed this spiritual heart condition over time.
Overlooked by His Father - (God looks at the heart)
Seen as inadequate in the face of his greatest challenge
In both these circumstances he comes out victorious but David’s issue is what happens when your prosperity turns to pride.
When you begin to think that it was you who did it.
Now David has bitten off more than he can chew - He’s at his wits end and realizes theres something wrong with my heart.
Life has taken what was pure and perverted it
You weren’t always like this.
