1. The figure of Melchizedek ()
A. He was the priest-king of the city of Salem ()
This was not the Jewish way. Priests were from the tribe of Levi. Priest were from the tribe of Judah.
B. He met Abraham after his return from rescuing Lot. ()
C. Abraham gave him a tenth of the spoils of war. ()
Why? Giving tribute demonstrates submission.
C. His name means “King of Righteousness”. ()
D. He is “King of Peace”. ()
E. There is no further record of his life. ()
Notice, he says “resembling (or like) the Son of God” (CSB). It is not saying Melchizedek is the Son of God. It is obvious that at very least Melchizedek prefigures the Messiah; however, the author is not necessarily saying Melchizedek is a supernatural or divine being. His focus is on the superiority of the Melchizedekian priesthood to the Levitical priesthood in relation to the person and work of the Messiah. The Bible does not give us the details of Melchizedek’s qualifications for priesthood, like it does the priesthood of the Levites.
2. The greatness of Melchizedek ()
A. Abraham, the father of the Levites, tithed to him. ()
i. By tithing to him, it is as if the Levites tithed to him. ()
ii. The priesthood recieved tithes and blessed the people because this was their responsibility ()
B. Melchizedek must be superior to Abraham because he collected tithes from Abraham and blessed Abraham, the one who was blessed by God. ()
C.
C. Melchizedek’s superiority is based on the fact that he collected tithes, blessed Abraham, and has no record of death in the Scriptures. ()
