Shall we gather at the river,
Where bright angel feet have trod,
With its crystal tide forever
Flowing by the throne of God?
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river,
Washing up its silver spray,
We will talk and worship ever,
All the happy golden day.
Ere we reach the shining river,
Lay we every burden down;
Grace our spirits will deliver,
And provide a robe and crown.
Question: When we all gather at the river where will we be?
This, I think, is a topic that we maybe have not seriously thought through.
Let me show you from where I think the river will be.
Revelation 21.1
The New Jerusalem, this is the final home for believers.
John 14.
The place that Jesus prepared for us is the New Jerusalem.
Right now the New Jerusalem is in heaven (many different meanings of the word heaven).
The New Jerusalem is in the abode of God heaven, right now.
When God creates a new heaven and a new earth.
He is not going to remake the abode of God heaven, He is going to remake the sky and stars and the galaxies heaven.
Look at again
Where does the New Jerusalem come from?
It comes out of heaven from God, and it comes down.
That is, the New Jerusalem comes down out of the abode of God heaven and descends where?
The new earth.
Rev 21.3
Idea: God will dwell with men in that city on the new earth (like it was in the beginning of creation)
Idea: No sin allowed in God’s kingdom- it will be eradicated.
Rev 21.
Idea: All things NEW- no curse!
Idea: Everything and everyone who is still effected by the curse will be cast out of this kingdom into the lake of fire.
Rev 21.10
Idea: Holy Jerusalem , descending out of the abode of God heaven to earth (same idea as before)
Rev 21.21
Idea: Pearly gates, streets of gold- where do we associate these images?
Heaven.
But they are part of the New Jerusalem which will be on the new earth.
Idea: nothing unclean there, the gates will never be shut, no night, only glory and honor, nothing shall enter that city that defiles it because all the effects of sin will not exist in the kingdom.
Rev 22.1
Idea: Where is the river?
It is in the New Jerusalem, and so is the throne of God and of the Lamb!
And the tree of life is there too, and no that there is no so the fruit of that tree is freely given for the healing of the nations.
It is all in that New City which is a part of the new heaven and the new earth.
Idea: NO MORE CURSE!
Rev 22.
This is our forever and final destination.
We are not going to live in the abode of God heaven forever and ever.
We are going to live in the New Jerusalem on the new earth, and the Lord God will dwell with us and we shall reign with Him for ever and ever!
This is very much a part of the message of Easter.
You cannot fully understand the hope of Easter unless you understand these thoughts in .
The Kingdom of God- where we shall reign forever and ever!
