Shall we gather at the river, Where bright angel feet have trod, With its crystal tide forever Flowing by the throne of God?
Yes, we'll gather at the river, The beautiful, the beautiful river; Gather with the saints at the river That flows by the throne of God.
On the margin of the river, Washing up its silver spray, We will talk and worship ever, All the happy golden day.
Ere we reach the shining river, Lay we every burden down; Grace our spirits will deliver, And provide a robe and crown.
Question: When we all gather at the river where will we be?
This, I think, is a topic that we maybe have not seriously thought through. Let me show you from where I think the river will be.
Revelation 21:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Revelation 21.1
The New Jerusalem, this is the final home for believers.
John 14:1–3 KJV 1900
1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14.
The place that Jesus prepared for us is the New Jerusalem. Right now the New Jerusalem is in heaven (many different meanings of the word heaven). The New Jerusalem is in the abode of God heaven, right now. When God creates a new heaven and a new earth. He is not going to remake the abode of God heaven, He is going to remake the sky and stars and the galaxies heaven.
Look at again
Revelation 21:2 KJV 1900
2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Where does the New Jerusalem come from? It comes out of heaven from God, and it comes down. That is, the New Jerusalem comes down out of the abode of God heaven and descends where? The new earth.
Rev 21.3
Revelation 21:3 KJV 1900
3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
Idea: God will dwell with men in that city on the new earth (like it was in the beginning of creation)
Revelation 21:4 KJV 1900
4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Idea: No sin allowed in God’s kingdom- it will be eradicated.
Rev 21.
Revelation 21:5 KJV 1900
5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
Idea: All things NEW- no curse!
Revelation 21:6–8 KJV 1900
6 And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. 7 He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Idea: Everything and everyone who is still effected by the curse will be cast out of this kingdom into the lake of fire.
Rev 21.10
Revelation 21:10 KJV 1900
10 And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,
Idea: Holy Jerusalem , descending out of the abode of God heaven to earth (same idea as before)
Rev 21.21
Revelation 21:21 KJV 1900
21 And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass.
Idea: Pearly gates, streets of gold- where do we associate these images? Heaven. But they are part of the New Jerusalem which will be on the new earth.
Revelation 21:23–27 KJV 1900
23 And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. 24 And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. 25 And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. 26 And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. 27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
Idea: nothing unclean there, the gates will never be shut, no night, only glory and honor, nothing shall enter that city that defiles it because all the effects of sin will not exist in the kingdom.
Rev 22.1
Revelation 22:1–2 KJV 1900
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
Idea: Where is the river? It is in the New Jerusalem, and so is the throne of God and of the Lamb! And the tree of life is there too, and no that there is no so the fruit of that tree is freely given for the healing of the nations. It is all in that New City which is a part of the new heaven and the new earth.
Revelation 22:3 KJV 1900
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
Idea: NO MORE CURSE!
Rev 22.
Revelation 22:4–5 KJV 1900
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. 5 And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.
This is our forever and final destination. We are not going to live in the abode of God heaven forever and ever. We are going to live in the New Jerusalem on the new earth, and the Lord God will dwell with us and we shall reign with Him for ever and ever! This is very much a part of the message of Easter. You cannot fully understand the hope of Easter unless you understand these thoughts in .
The Kingdom of God- where we shall reign forever and ever!
