Genesis 2:15–17 ESV
The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
In Man is presented with it’s 1st command. God commanded man to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This command lead to the first decision on earth. Man had a choice to make, obey God or disobey God. This is what makes humankind different from plants and animals. Humans, created in the image of God, have reasoning and decision making. With this characteristic Adam had the option to disobey God and give into temptation. Evil is not of God and not a characteristic of God. God is fully and completely righteous and holy. With the ability to make decisions came the reality of evil. With the option to choose disobedience came the possibility of bringing evil into the world. With man’s ability to make decisions, they had the option to disobey God which would lead to the introduction of evil into reality. With obedience to God, righteousness continues and humankind continues as God had set it into motion. With disobedience brings depravity and corruption into a pure world. Man had a choice to between good and evil, evil or righteousness. Man is presented with the first decision in the history of man.
Genesis 3:1–7 ESV
Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
The serpent (satan) is crafty
Satan got them to question the scripture
The woman exaggerated what God said when she said “neither shall you touch it”
Satan distorts the image of God
we do this today when we view God’s commandments limitations not freedoms
Satan
Satan makes God appear power hungry
Genesis 3:8–13 ESV
And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:
Genesis 3:15In verses 8-13, we see the devastation of this sin. Evil entered the world and a separation between man and God swept in. They hid from the Lord. They hid from what created them, from what formed them, from what made them pure. They were inhibited in there relationship with christ. They were sinless and without fault and with this sin, separation entered the world. They could no longer have a close intimate relationship with God because God is Holy and Just.
They hid from God
Genesis
Genesis 3:14 ESV
The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life.
Shifted the blame somewhere else
