Overall
Logic: What you do reveals who you are, who you are is defined by how you know Jesus
Jesus is showing and teaching himself to everyone, some are curious but turn away, others are confused but learning, and others still truly know him.
When they know Him the reality of what their life looks like smacks them in the face: pick up the cross.
Do you know who I am? This is what it means to be the Messiah. This is what it means to be a disciple of the Messiah.
This is a swell of events leading up to his announcement of who He is
Luke paints a picture of what is is that everyone is buying into: people are interested, ideas and thoughts are piqued, but what is it exactly? What does it mean to follow Jesus?
Jesus performs miracles, does some teaching and crowds notice. He then sends 12 disciples- and people notice all of that.
Pretty soon Jesus is sitting there looking at 5000 people, but do they actually know who He is? Do they know what this life is about? Does His group of disciples even know?
Pretty soon Jesus is sitting there looking at 5000 people, but do they actually know who He is? Do they know what this life is about? Does His group of disciples even know?
So He asks them (18-20). One has the right answer.
After teaching for so long, showing for so long, He finally just tells them: suffering, death, resurrection.
Do you want this? Can you do this? If you are following me then you MUST do this- everyday!
You MUST live your life upside down and backwards.
Like Erised, like a horror movie ____ (where you see your worst fear), like a total body workout: the weakest, hardest, most painful thing is what needs to be dealt with
You want your life to be most important: lose it
You want this whole entire world? its gonna burn.
You want to be ashamed of Jesus? Ashamed of what He said? This isn’t a game- the time is coming.
1-9
The only way to spread the word was to spread it themselves
“Take Nothing” is a explaining Jesus’ intentional brevity with this adventure.
It isn’t to establish a church, it isn’t to teach the most complex doctrines.
Go with the simple message of salvation, and then come back. (short term missions trip)
Jesus sent them, they did what they were supposed to. People heard, people were healed. But, some negative reactions were had also
Not negative as in rejection, that was expected. But, negative as in weak, futile, cheap, entertainment driven.
Herod wants to see Jesus, but only because He is curious.
10-17
Jesus is making moves toward revealing Himself fully to people as the Messiah, but the crowds are still interested. Which is good and fine, in fact Jesus is glad about it.
The idea of sending these lost people away is stupid to Jesus. No. Perform a miracle instead of not teaching them truth.
The disciples had just gone out and healed people and performed miracles, but they didn’t understand WHY they were sent to do that.
WHY did they go show God’s power through Jesus to people?
WHY did they proclaim that the Kingdom of God is here?
WHY would Jesus rather do a miracle than send people away?
Because people need to know who Jesus is.
18-20
Now, who is Jesus?
If that is what all of this is about, how do they answer that question?
Some people don’t really care to find out (Herod)
They are curious, seems interesting. But, idc enough to look.
You might have friends here, good friends, that just wont ever take a close look
Some of the crowd kinda get the idea that Jesus and God go together.
They realize that there is something special, but don’t know enough to tell you what.
This is a lot of people in the church.
They know stories or ideas. They come to things. They show up and eat the bread. But, if you asked them point-blank they would give you confused answers.
But, then there are those that know Jesus: the Christ of God
Christ, Christo, Messiah, the Savior.
The Appointed one. Chosen and sent to suffer and save.
This is who Jesus was revealing, teaching, and declaring Himself as
21-26
Now they got it!
This is who He is! What does that mean though, to be the Christ?
Jesus tells them. It means the Gospel.
What you do is reveals who you are and who you are is defined by how you know Jesus. This is who Jesus is, the Christ of God, so that should define who we are. And Jesus does that next.
“if anyone”- any person who would follow Jesus needs to do it this way. They need to live this way. This is how their actions should be defined: choose my way.
If you try to choose your way, you’ll lose everything.
If you ignore what I am saying, you’ll lose it all.
If you are ashamed by me, I will be ashamed of you.
Know me as the One saving you from yourself, that is now who you are, and you are expected to live like it.

Intro

What you do reveals who you are, who you are is defined by how you know Jesus.
So, let me tell you about who I am: My deepest desire is for me to be whats most important, for me to feel the best, for me to be thought well of.
This is me: I am selfish.
**Over scheduled, under valuing Kaitlyn and over valuing myself.**
That’s where I am as a person.
The things I do show me and you what is in my heart. The issues that come out, the rough parts show me where I don’t engage Jesus enough or honestly.
I am a Christian, so I know that I am saved and I don’t worry that if I mess up I will go to hell.
But, I know how I should act and talk and think. I know that I am less than perfect. I know that I need to know Jesus more.
This whole series is about knowing who Jesus is. Who did Jesus say He was? How did He teach that or show that and give that information to us?
My hope and prayer for this sermon and series is that we will be able to meet Jesus on these pages and He will say “this is who I am: God, Man, Servant, King. And this is who you are: a sinner who needs me”
Then we will be able to connect the dots from what we struggle with to the desire of our hearts, and from our hearts we draw a line to our relationship with Jesus.
We will realize that what we do reveals who we are, and who we are is defined by how you know Jesus.

Closing

I chose to be selfish and prideful with Kaitlyn and that was wrong. That is not who I am as a follower of Christ, that is who I am when I choose my way instead.
What I do (reveals who I am)
What do you do? What choices are you making every day?
The little ones. The ones that you might not even really be thinking about.
The bigger ones. People are watching you and you want to do the right thing.
The cross
What I do reveals who I am
Who are you?
You can say your a follower of Christ, but are you following?
Are you picking up your cross daily?
In a 24 hour period are you actually saying “no” to the way you want to do it and choosing His way?
What I do reveals who I am, and who I am is defined by how I know Jesus
How do you know Jesus?
Curious, Confused, or Christian
I frame it that way because that is how we see it in the Scripture: some just looked form the outside, some were trying to figure it out and others said “yes, I believe”
But, then Jesus taught them the whole truth: this will change who you are and change how you live.

CHALLENGE

How do you think God wants to change who you are?
What do you think God wants to change about what you do?
Specific actions that you know aren’t right to him
How do you think God wants to change who you are?
Those specific actions come from specific places.
Maybe you are angry or bitter, worried or anxious, lustful or not content, self-conscious or prideful like me...
