1. Singing is a key part of our worship service to God.
2. There are a number of things that we do while we are singing which are instrumental to our worship services to God.
A. We let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.
B. We teach one another by speaking to one another.
C. We admonish one another by speaking to one another.
D. We allow grace to fill our hearts by making melody in our hearts to the Lord.
E. We give thanks to God by our songs, doing everything in Jesus’ name.
F. We offer sacrifice to God through Jesus by the fruit of our lips— singing.
G. Lastly, we are to sing cheerfully or happily to God.
3. Knowing that there is so much that God requires us to accomplish while we sing, should we not take great diligence to making sure what we are singing is correct?
A. Notice how many of the above mentioned things God requires of us in our songs entail us to know God’s Word and properly use it in our songs.
BODY:
1. WE LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN US RICHLY
A. In order for the Word of Christ to dwell in us, we must know it and apply it in our lives.

In order for us to show that Christ dwells in us richly by our songs, we must sing according to His Word.
John 1:1-2
A. Christ is the Word and in order for Him to dwell in us through song, we must not go beyond it in our songs.

2. WE TEACH ONE ANOTHER BY SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER.
A. What we say in our songs is of the utmost importance because whether we are speaking truth or lies, we are teaching.

If we are singing false doctrine, we are teaching false doctrine.
2. God warns about allowing false doctrine into our homes; how do you think he feels about false doctrine in His house—the church, whether it is sung, taught in Sunday school, or preached from the pulpit?

The only way we can be sure that false doctrine does not seep into His house is by comparing what we sing by the truth.
4. We must understand what we sing by God’s Word.

3. WE ADMONISH ONE ANOTHER BY SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER.
A. The word “admonish” means to reprove, caution, reprimand, or rebuke.

The Word of God is what we are to use to admonish.
2. If we are singing something false, how can we use our songs to admonish properly the person who believes something false?
A. Part of the work of the church is to help people learn the truth and to correct error.

Notice what Paul says in the very next chapter of 2 Timothy: he charges us to...and warns us of…

If we are not teaching the truth through song, we become the teachers who are causing the itching ears and will be partly responsible for them turning away from the truth to fables.
4. WE ALLOW GRACE TO FILL OUR HEARTS BY MAKING MELODY IN OUR HEARTS TO THE LORD.
A. When we sing properly, we keep the commands of Jesus and show our love to Him.
B. When we keep His commandments, He extends His grace to us.

The word “faith” shows us that we receive His grace when we have been obedient to His Word.

C. So, when one has faith and does what God says to do, one obtains God’s grace.

Therefore, when one sings the way that God says to sing, this individual obtains God’s grace, which fills his heart, and he sings with melody in his heart because of God’s grace.
5. WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD BY OUR SONGS, DOING EVERYTHING IN JESUS’ NAME.
A. When we do everything in Jesus’s name or by His authority, we are telling God, ‘Thank you for Your Word.’

By doing this, we are showing appreciation to God for giving us everything that pertains to life and Godliness through His Son.
B. When we sing the way that we are commanded to, we show our appreciation, just as children show their appreciation by being obedient to their parents.

We are God’s children, and we show our thanks by being obedient to Him.
2. Our children are special to us, and the church is God’s special people when they proclaim His praises.
A. One of the ways we proclaim His praises is by our song service to Him, so we give Him thanks when we sing properly, being one of His special children.
6. WE OFFER SACRIFICE TO GOD THROUGH JESUS BY THE FRUIT OF OUR LIPS—SINGING.
A. Proper sacrifice has been instrumental to acceptable worship dating all the way back to Cain and Abel and up to the present.
1. Cain’s fruit offering was not accepted.
2. Why did God not accept Cain’s sacrifice?
A. In these verses, God implies that Cain should have known better by asking, “Why are you angry?
And why has your countenance fallen?”
And by following those two questions with a third, “If you do well, will you not be accepted?”

But how would Cain have known to do well and be accepted?
2. God must have told Cain how to do well and be accepted and Cain ignored it; thus, his sacrifice was not accepted.
3. Nadab and Abihu’s offering was not acceptable to God.
A. Why was their offering not acceptable?
1.
Because God had not commanded them.
A. In other words, they had not followed God’s Word, so their sacrifice was not pleasing to Him and the result was death.
4. Ananias and Sapphira’s offering or sacrifice of their land and money was not accepted by God.
Acts 5.1-
Acts 5:7-

Why was their sacrifice not accepted by God?
A. Because they lied to God and did not offer their sacrifice properly, according to God’s Word.
B. There were other people who offered their sacrifice of land and money, and they were accepted by God.

These people offered their sacrifices properly by God’s Word and did not lie to God.
4. Ananias and Sapphira’s offering or sacrifice of their land and money was not accepted by God.
5. We are commanded to offer sacrifices to God today.
A. If our sacrifices are not according to His Word, they will not be acceptable to Him, just as all of the sacrifices before us which were not according to His Word.
B. We are commanded to offer the sacrifice of the fruit of our lips; we had better make sure it is acceptable to Him, because it is from His Word.

So when we sing, we had better make sure it is according to the Gospel of our Lord—His Word.
7. LASTLY, WE ARE TO SING CHEERFULLY OR HAPPLILY TO GOD.

A. As God’s people, we are to be happy and cheerful.
B. Our sacrifice to God should be our very best!

We need to remember that when we are singing we are offering sacrifice to God by the fruit of our lips.
2. Whenever we sing to God in worship or anywhere, we should give it all we have because—
A. It should make us happy to know we are serving our Lord properly in our songs, giving our best to Him.

If we do not sing, or if we sing so that no one hears us in services, we are not giving God our best.
A. If we are not doing our best, we are not approved of by God.
B. It does not matter what we sound like; singing to God should make us happy and therefore, we should not care what we sound like, just that we are pleasing to God.
CONCLUSION:
1. Singing is an instrumental part of our worship service to God, but it must be done properly.
A. We must—
1. let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.
2. teach one another by speaking to one another.
3. admonish one another by speaking to one another.
4. allow grace to fill our hearts by making melody in our hearts to the Lord.
5. give thanks to God by our songs, doing everything in Jesus’ name.
