INTRODUCTION:

Colossians 3:1–3 NKJV
1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Col 3.1-
Colossians 3:2 NKJV
2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Philippians 3:12–14 NKJV
12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
Phil 3.12-

1. Singing is a key part of our worship service to God.

Colossians 3:16–17 NKJV
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
Ephesians 5:19–20 NKJV
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Hebrews 13:15 NKJV
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
James 5:13 NKJV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.

2. There are a number of things that we do while we are singing which are instrumental to our worship services to God.

A. We let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.

B. We teach one another by speaking to one another.

C. We admonish one another by speaking to one another.

D. We allow grace to fill our hearts by making melody in our hearts to the Lord.

E. We give thanks to God by our songs, doing everything in Jesus’ name.

F. We offer sacrifice to God through Jesus by the fruit of our lips— singing.

G. Lastly, we are to sing cheerfully or happily to God.

3. Knowing that there is so much that God requires us to accomplish while we sing, should we not take great diligence to making sure what we are singing is correct?

A. Notice how many of the above mentioned things God requires of us in our songs entail us to know God’s Word and properly use it in our songs.

BODY:

1. WE LET THE WORD OF CHRIST DWELL IN US RICHLY

A. In order for the Word of Christ to dwell in us, we must know it and apply it in our lives.

. 1-2
1 Corinthians 15:1–2 NKJV
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.

1. In order for us to show that Christ dwells in us richly by our songs, we must sing according to His Word.

Colossians 3:17 NKJV
17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
John 1:1-2
John 1:1–2 NKJV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.

A. Christ is the Word and in order for Him to dwell in us through song, we must not go beyond it in our songs.

1 Corinthians 4:6 NKJV
6 Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

2. WE TEACH ONE ANOTHER BY SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER.

A. What we say in our songs is of the utmost importance because whether we are speaking truth or lies, we are teaching.

1. If we are singing false doctrine, we are teaching false doctrine.

2. God warns about allowing false doctrine into our homes; how do you think he feels about false doctrine in His house—the church, whether it is sung, taught in Sunday school, or preached from the pulpit?

2 John 9
2 John 9–10 NKJV
9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him;

3. The only way we can be sure that false doctrine does not seep into His house is by comparing what we sing by the truth.

John 17:17 NKJV
17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

4. We must understand what we sing by God’s Word.

1 Corinthians 14:15 NKJV
15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

5. We must control our tongue and understand what we say and teach, even when we sing.

1 Timothy 1:
1 Timothy 1:5–7 NKJV
5 Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith, 6 from which some, having strayed, have turned aside to idle talk, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, understanding neither what they say nor the things which they affirm.

6. We must control our tongue and understand what we say and teach, even when we sing.

Eph 4.
Ephesians 4:29 NKJV
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

7. False doctrine is just as harmful sung as spoken in a class or preached from the pulpit.

Titus 1:10–11 NKJV
10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain.

3. WE ADMONISH ONE ANOTHER BY SPEAKING TO ONE ANOTHER.

A. The word “admonish” means to reprove, caution, reprimand, or rebuke.

1. The Word of God is what we are to use to admonish.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 NKJV
16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2. If we are singing something false, how can we use our songs to admonish properly the person who believes something false?

A. Part of the work of the church is to help people learn the truth and to correct error.

1. Notice what Paul says in the very next chapter of 2 Timothy: he charges us to...and warns us of…
2 Timothy 4:1–2 NKJV
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
2 Timothy 4:1–4 NKJV
1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NKJV
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.
2 Timothy 4
1. If we are not teaching the truth through song, we become the teachers who are causing the itching ears and will be partly responsible for them turning away from the truth to fables.

4. WE ALLOW GRACE TO FILL OUR HEARTS BY MAKING MELODY IN OUR HEARTS TO THE LORD.

A. When we sing properly, we keep the commands of Jesus and show our love to Him.

John 14:15 NKJV
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.

B. When we keep His commandments, He extends His grace to us.

Ephesians 2:8 NKJV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

1. The word “faith” shows us that we receive His grace when we have been obedient to His Word.

James 2:17 NKJV
17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

2. The word “faith” also shows us that we obtain His grace by knowing His Word.

Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17 NKJV
17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

3. The word “faith” also shows us that we cannot be pleasing to God without it.

Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
Hebrews 11:6 NKJV
6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

C. So, when one has faith and does what God says to do, one obtains God’s grace.

1. Therefore, when one sings the way that God says to sing, this individual obtains God’s grace, which fills his heart, and he sings with melody in his heart because of God’s grace.

5. WE GIVE THANKS TO GOD BY OUR SONGS, DOING EVERYTHING IN JESUS’ NAME.

A. When we do everything in Jesus’s name or by His authority, we are telling God, ‘Thank you for Your Word.’

1. By doing this, we are showing appreciation to God for giving us everything that pertains to life and Godliness through His Son.

2 Peter 1:3–4 NKJV
3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

B. When we sing the way that we are commanded to, we show our appreciation, just as children show their appreciation by being obedient to their parents.

1. We are God’s children, and we show our thanks by being obedient to Him.

1 Peter 2:9 NKJV
9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

2. Our children are special to us, and the church is God’s special people when they proclaim His praises.

A. One of the ways we proclaim His praises is by our song service to Him, so we give Him thanks when we sing properly, being one of His special children.

6. WE OFFER SACRIFICE TO GOD THROUGH JESUS BY THE FRUIT OF OUR LIPS—SINGING.

A. Proper sacrifice has been instrumental to acceptable worship dating all the way back to Cain and Abel and up to the present.

1. Cain’s fruit offering was not accepted.

Genesis 4:3–5 NKJV
3 And in the process of time it came to pass that Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the Lord. 4 Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering, 5 but He did not respect Cain and his offering. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell.

2. Why did God not accept Cain’s sacrifice?

Genesis 4:6–7 NKJV
6 So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”

A. In these verses, God implies that Cain should have known better by asking, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?” And by following those two questions with a third, “If you do well, will you not be accepted?”

1. But how would Cain have known to do well and be accepted?
2. God must have told Cain how to do well and be accepted and Cain ignored it; thus, his sacrifice was not accepted.

3. Nadab and Abihu’s offering was not acceptable to God.

Leviticus 10:1–2 NKJV
1 Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. 2 So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.

A. Why was their offering not acceptable?

1. Because God had not commanded them.
A. In other words, they had not followed God’s Word, so their sacrifice was not pleasing to Him and the result was death.

4. Ananias and Sapphira’s offering or sacrifice of their land and money was not accepted by God.

Acts 5:1–2 NKJV
1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
Acts 5.1-
Acts 5:3–4 NKJV
3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”
Acts 5:5–6 NKJV
5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things. 6 And the young men arose and wrapped him up, carried him out, and buried him.
Acts 5:7–8 NKJV
7 Now it was about three hours later when his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter answered her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?” She said, “Yes, for so much.”
Acts 5:9–10 NKJV
9 Then Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband.
Acts 5:7-

1. Why was their sacrifice not accepted by God?

A. Because they lied to God and did not offer their sacrifice properly, according to God’s Word.
B. There were other people who offered their sacrifice of land and money, and they were accepted by God.
Acts 4:34–35 NKJV
34 Nor was there anyone among them who lacked; for all who were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the proceeds of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them at the apostles’ feet; and they distributed to each as anyone had need.
1. These people offered their sacrifices properly by God’s Word and did not lie to God.

4. Ananias and Sapphira’s offering or sacrifice of their land and money was not accepted by God.

5. We are commanded to offer sacrifices to God today.

Romans 12:1–2 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Matthew 16:24 NKJV
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.
Hebrews 13:15 NKJV
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

A. If our sacrifices are not according to His Word, they will not be acceptable to Him, just as all of the sacrifices before us which were not according to His Word.

B. We are commanded to offer the sacrifice of the fruit of our lips; we had better make sure it is acceptable to Him, because it is from His Word.

2 Thessalonians 1:8–10 NKJV
8 in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
1. So when we sing, we had better make sure it is according to the Gospel of our Lord—His Word.
Romans 1:16 NKJV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

7. LASTLY, WE ARE TO SING CHEERFULLY OR HAPPLILY TO GOD.

7. LASTLY, WE ARE TO SING CHEERFULLY OR HAPPILY TO GOD.

James 5:13 NKJV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms.

A. As God’s people, we are to be happy and cheerful.

Philippians 4:4 NKJV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!
1 Thessalonians 5:16 NKJV
16 Rejoice always,

B. Our sacrifice to God should be our very best!

.

Colossians 3:23–24 NKJV
23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23–24 NIV
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, 24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

1. We need to remember that when we are singing we are offering sacrifice to God by the fruit of our lips.

Hebrews 13:15 NKJV
15 Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.

2. Whenever we sing to God in worship or anywhere, we should give it all we have because—

A. It should make us happy to know we are serving our Lord properly in our songs, giving our best to Him.

1. If we do not sing, or if we sing so that no one hears us in services, we are not giving God our best.
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
A. If we are not doing our best, we are not approved of by God.
B. It does not matter what we sound like; singing to God should make us happy and therefore, we should not care what we sound like, just that we are pleasing to God.

CONCLUSION:

1. Singing is an instrumental part of our worship service to God, but it must be done properly.

A. We must—

1. let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.

2. teach one another by speaking to one another.

3. admonish one another by speaking to one another.

4. allow grace to fill our hearts by making melody in our hearts to the Lord.

5. give thanks to God by our songs, doing everything in Jesus’ name.

6. offer sacrifice to God through Jesus by the fruit of our lips—singing.

7. sing cheerfully or happily to God.

2. We must absolutely make sure our songs are according to God’s Word and therefore acceptable to Him or else, we will be judged by God’s Word to be unacceptable to Him.

John 12:48 NKJV
48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
