God Keeps His Promises: Christ Has Come; Christ Will Come Again

People in our world make all kinds of promises

Some promises are more trustworthy than others

Some promises take longer than others

Sometimes we wonder whether the person will ever keep their promise

In the Bible, God makes all kinds of promises

· Eve & serpent, Abraham, David.
· Promise of coming Savoiur priest king
· Promise that God would come and bring eternal peace

God is trustworthy but the promises take a long time and sometimes they might have wondered whether God would keep His promise

People wonder whether God will really come back again

· 2 Peter 3:3-4 , “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”
· We might ask that in 2018
· It’s taking a long time. Will God really keep his promise? If yes, what difference does that make for us today?
· Christ has come, Christ will come again. That’s what we say in Advent, but is it really true?
· Mary, Joseph, Elizabeth, and other faithful Jews might have asked the same thing. The promise was taking a long time.

God Keeps His Promises – Christ Has Come

God promised Mary that she would give birth to the Messiah

· No word from God will ever fail

God promised Elizabeth that she would have a child

· Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfil His promises to her.

God’s promise to Abraham’s descendants would be fulfilled through Mary’s child.

· He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

God Keeps His promises

· God is trustworthy and powerful. God keeps His promises. Christ has Come.

God Keeps His Promises – Christ Will Come Again

Will Christ Really Come Again?

God is not slow in Keeping His Promise; He is Patient

· 2nd Peter 3:8-9. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

God Keeps His promises

· God is trustworthy and powerful. God keeps His promises. Christ will come again.

Since Christ Will Come Again, We Should Live Faithful, Obedient Lives

Since God will come again, then does it matter how we should live?

· Live like Mary and Elizabeth – faithful, trusting, obedient
· 2 Peter 3:11-15 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. […]. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 14 So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him…

Examples of how to live (Follow God Even When It Is Hard)

· Faithful,
· Trusting
· Obedient

Christ’s Coming Matters Even If We Die First

What If we die first?

· What if you are 75 or92 (or 17 for that matter) and might die before Jesus comes back?
· We won’t miss out.
· (Paraphrasing 1 Thess 5:15-17. The dead in Christ will rise first, then those still alive will be caught up to meet them. So we will all see Him together with our own eyes. The Lord will come down, the Trumpet will Call. We will be with the Lord forever.
· There will be no more death, grief, pain, sin, war
· There will be true peace… Forever.
· Now that’s promise.
· Christ has Come! Christ Will Come Again!
