John 9:1 NIV84
As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth.
Jesus just left the Feast of the Tabernacles. Remember the implication of Jesus being the light?
Chorno
John 8:12 NIV84
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
We will see this again in .
Jesus has just been threatened to be stoned, yet as He goes, He has healing on His mind and heart. He is aware of the needs of others despite of the continual threat against His life. He chooses to show mercy on His way.
How often do we hastily go about our day and overlook opportunities to extend mercy?
We should heed the example of our Lord and do good as we pass by.
Let’s look at the condition of this man. He was blind from birth.
Why did Jesus give light to this man?
Job 3:20–23 NIV84
“Why is light given to those in misery, and life to the bitter of soul, to those who long for death that does not come, who search for it more than for hidden treasure, who are filled with gladness and rejoice when they reach the grave? Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
Jesus gave what no one else could give him in an instance of His power.
He gave sight to that which by nature was blind. Notice the parallels here:
We are sinful by nature. therefore we must be given light to transform the darkness we reside in.
Jesus was compassionate toward the man. Jesus saw the man. He didn’t walk by saying He didn’t have time for him. Jesus was aware of the man’s condition. Even when the man wasn’t aware of Jesus, Jesus was aware of him!
Isaiah 65:1 NIV84
“I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me; I was found by those who did not seek me. To a nation that did not call on my name, I said, ‘Here am I, here am I.’
Galatians 4:9 NIV84
But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable principles? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again?
John 9:2 NIV84
His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”
The Jews believed that sin and suffering are connected. This belief assumes either he sinned in the womb, or his parents did.
Genesis 3 NIV84
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living. The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Psalm 89:32 NIV84
I will punish their sin with the rod, their iniquity with flogging;
Ezekiel
Ezekiel 18:20 NIV84
The soul who sins is the one who will die. The son will not share the guilt of the father, nor will the father share the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous man will be credited to him, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against him.
Ezekiel 18:4 NIV84
For every living soul belongs to me, the father as well as the son—both alike belong to me. The soul who sins is the one who will die.
Exodus 20:5 NIV84
You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,
People tend to associate sin with catastrophe. We learn later that is simply not the case.
John 9:3 NIV84
“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.
These words to not contradict the universal sinfulness of mankind.
Romans 3:9–23 NIV84
What shall we conclude then? Are we any better? Not at all! We have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under sin. As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.” “Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.” “The poison of vipers is on their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; ruin and misery mark their ways, and the way of peace they do not know.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans
Jesus states the man’s blindness was not because of a specific sin. Rather, this existed so God could display His glory.
Exodus 4:11 NIV84
The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord?
2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV84
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
So what can we learn from these 3 verses?
