So we compensate—Act most confident (Cocky)—most insecure!

Don’t ask her out.
Don’t even try to get in shape.
WE DON’T NEED SELF-CONFIDENCE.
WE SHOULD CULTIVATE GOD CONFIDENCE.
Why I’m not focused on self-confidence!
· My heart is deceitful
· My flesh is weak
· My behavior is inconsistent
My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident.
No wonder I can sing your praises!
NLT
BACKGROUND:
Isaiah the prophet lived during the time of one of Judah’s greatest kings: Hezekiah.
He was given visions of Israel’s greatest tragedies and greatest triumphs and almost everything in between.
Of all the writing prophets in Israel’s history, Isaiah saw the future geography of Israel from his days, to the days of the Messiah to the days of Kingdom of God on earth when swords or beaten to plowshares and all the earth is renewed.
Isaiah also saw Israel’s lowest moments in history.
IN the paragraph just before the one we are going to study it says of Israel
Isaiah issues a declaration of guilt on Israel.
A declaration of spiritual dullness and apathy.
Everyone knows what follows a declaration of guilt such as that in 42:18–25.
They know it from community life and they know it from the way the prophets apply the image to Israel’s life with God.
After the declaration of guilt comes the sentencing.
Insides tremble as ears wait for the thunderous “therefore” (see, e.g., 1:24; 5:13, 14, 24, 25).
Israel needed hope following destruction and exile after God abandoned Zion as a result of Israel’s sins (1:7–8).
It never arrives.
The logic of grace takes over, and the declaration of failure instead introduces a “fear not” oracle, the kind of commitment given to a king under pressure rather than the kind of declaration made to a criminal about punishment.
Isaiah lays out for Israel and for us condemnation but confidence from God.
