Disappointment

Life is full of it.
Once upon a time before I was born thing were awesome, I was sheltered and safe, not a care in the world. Then one day I was surrounded by bright lights and loud noises and before I could even start to adjust someone smacked my bottom with enough force that I began to cry — I didn’t even know I could cry — And it has never been right since.

Life is Hard

I know I say this a lot, but I say it because it’s true. It is full of disappointment.

What we are going to do today is take this passage an look at what most people thing is the greatest disappointment, and see the light in it.

The Story.

Mary and Martha send for Jesus because their brother Lazarus is sick
By the way if you do the math in this passage, he is already dead. — read it when you get home.
Jesus stays 2 more days
after the 2 days he say lets go to Judea
the disciple don’t want to go. remembering that the Jews almost stoned Jesus last time they were there.
Thomas the Twin (DIDYMUS)
Jesus comforts the sisters
note the Martha went to meet Jesus and Mary stayed home
John 11:20 ESV
So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary remained seated in the house.
John 11:20
See the great disappointment.
Mary wiped Jesus’s feet with her hair in an unashamed demonstration of love and gratitude for the forgiveness of her sin.
When at Martha’s house, Mary was the one who couldn’t tear herself away to be prepared.
See that Jesus reaches out to the broken hearted..
John 11:28 ESV
When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying in private, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.”
John 11:28
The sisters take Jesus to the tomb of lazarus
Jesus weeps
moved by the emotion of those close to Lazarus
possibly because of his own humanity and empathizing with those suffering loss (Jesus recognizes our pain and disappointment and is deeply moved by it.)
Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.
I said this quickly because I want to get to 3 foundational statements that Jesus make.
John 11:10 ESV
But if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.”
John 11:25 ESV
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live,
Jn
John 11:41–42 ESV
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.”
John 11:41 ESV
So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

jn 11

It is when a person walks in the night that they stumble, for they have no light.

We do not have it within ourselves to avoid all the disappointment that there is in the world today. ONLY HE
Hopes and dreams are dashed
One of the sayings I hate the most is “you can do anything you set your mind to.”
If you just believe good things will happen, then they will..
IT IS NOT OUR BELIEF THAT MAKES THINGS HAPPEN, IT’S JESUS!
IT IS NOT OUR BELIEF THAT MAKES THINGS HAPPEN, IT’S JESUS!
WHAT OUR BELIEF DOES IS GIVE US HOPE
WHAT OUR BELIEF DOES IS GIVE US HOPE
GOD IS GOOD ...
GOD IS GOOD ...
Eventually - you die.

I AM the Resurrection and the life.

John 1:1–4 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
John 1:4 ESV
In him was life, and the life was the light of men.

Your dead hopes and dreams - if they are founded in Christ - are never truly dead.

Earlier “This will not lead to death” (he already was)
There is coming a day when we will be risen and we will be in that mansion in the sky....
He’s not just talking about that...
what keeps you down
sin
bitterness
anger
hopelessness
other people
Today He can raise it up.

That They Might Believe

It is the main thing.
sickness
When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, many things were demonstrated.
Bad things happen to good people
Even Bad things can work to glorify God the Father
Jesus is all-powerful
victory over death - the ultimate in disappointment (calvin and hobbes)
He is the source of life.

Conclusion

Jesus want to bring us to a place where we can trust in him. You see, in him we have hope. In him we have life. In him we have light. In him is everything we need to get through this world. Now maybe we lack the belief that we should have.
Maybe we once had the passion of Mary who didn’t care what people though of her she was going to worship Him despite the embarrassment,
but now the things of the world distracted us. and we find ourselves unable to get up even when we know He’s coming.
BUT JESUS STILL IS CALLING FOR US
WHEN WE ARE HURT .. HE CRIES FOR US
HE IS DEEPLY MOVED.
HE BRINGS US LIFE. HE RESURRECTS THE THINGS THAT NEED TO BE RESURRECTED.
LET US RISE UP OUR HEARTS TO HIM AND LET HIM DO WHAT HE DOES.
