Luke 2:41-
In , it talks about Jesus as a boy when he was 12 years old, he went to the feast of the passover with his parents.
When the feast was over, they made their way back home, but Jesus stayed behind at the temple in Jerusalem.
When his parent found out that he was not with them, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.
When they found him, they asked him why he had treated them like that, they had been very worried and looking for him.
What did Jesus say to them?
Why are you looking for me?
Did you not know that I must be in my father’s house?
After that, he went back with them and was submissive to them.
And in verse 52 it says that Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favour with God and man.
From all this, what do we know about Jesus?
Jesus knew his purpose very early on in his life.
He knew who he was and what he needed to do in his life.
Therefore he went to the temple to talk to the teachers there.
When his parents came to look for him, he asked them that why they were looking for him.
and that he must be in his father’s house.
It has been 12 years since the angel appeared to Mary and told her that she will have a son from God.
To me I think that Jesus was reminding them that he is really what the angel said to him was true.
He is really the son of God.
Just like the angel told her in Luke 1:35.
When Mary said your father and I have been looking for you.
Jesus said I must be in my father’s house.
These are the first recorded words of Jesus the son of man in the Bible.
Which tells us that Jesus purpose in life was to obey his heavenly father and not man.
In verse 52, it says that Jesus increased in wisdom and stature and favour with man.
Question, did Jesus have perfect knowledge and power when he became a man?
Jesus could have, but he chose to leave all these behind and experience the life of a normal human being.
Having to learn to speak and walk and grow in knowledge and wisdom.
Jesus was still fully God, but he chose not to use his powers so that he could be fully man.
So that he could take away our sins.
After that Jesus took time to grow up as a normal boy.
Then when he was ready at age 30, Jesus got baptised and straight after that went into the desert to be tempted by Satan.
Luke 3:
Luke 4:1
When we read verses 1 and 2, what do we notice?
Jesus was led into the wilderness for 40days and he did not eat.
The spirit led him into the wilderness.
Just like God led the Israelites into the wilderness for 40 years.
God tested the faith of the Israelites in the desert.
Israel who is the child of God failed when tested by God in the desert.
But Jesus the son of God had victory over temptation int he desert.
At the end of the 40 days, Jesus was hungry and tired.
This is when Satan comes.
And begins to test Jesus.
Satan did not tempt him when he just started.
Satan waited for Jesus to be weak and hungry before he started his attack.
In the desert, the Holy spirit led Jesus.
But Satan had plans to want to lead Jesus too.
In our lives, many times this is what satan wants to do.
Satan wants to lead us to walk away from the plans fo God and follow satan in our desires.
In all of the 3 temptations, there is a contrast between Jesus and Israel.
1) In the first temptation, Satan knew that Jesus was hungry and desperate for food.
So he tempted Jesus to use his powers to make food for himself.
Jesus came to be the son of man.
To be fully man and to experience life as a human being.
Experiencing hunger and tiredness.
But Jesus could choose to use his power if he wanted.
Satan tempted Jesus to follow the desire of the flesh and sin against God by turning the stones into bread so as to satisfy his desire more than obeying God.
But Jesus replied Man shall not live by bread alone.
Jesus depended on the word of God to sustain him more than food.
Deut
This temptation talks about the Israelites who were in the desert and they hungered for food and God humbled them and satisfied them with manna that God provided.
God provided not only food for them but God gave them his word that sustained them.
tin turakandan (Wilderness)
2) In the second temptation, Satan brought Jesus and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and told Jesus that if he worshipped satan, Satan would give him the world.
If Jesus worshipped Satan, he would not be fit to the perfect sacrifice for us.
Because he would have sinned against God by worshipping other Gods.
Satan is also tempting Jesus to receive the world without going to the cross.
Satan is trying to help Jesus to have a short cut.
Jesus reply is from .
Like the Israelites, Satan tempts them to worship the idols and put their trust in other things other than God. to find a easy way to live life rather than the right way to live life.
3) In the third temptation, Satan brings Jesus to the top of the temple and asks Jesus to jump and saying that God will come and save him.
ps 91:11
Satan only quoted from a part of .
He left out in all your ways.
The meaning is very different if you take away the last part.
Satan wants Jesus to test God to see if God will rescue him.
Satan is tempting Jesus to do something which is not in God’s plan and expect God to rescue him.
Just like the Israelites tested God and asked is the Lord among us or not.
Satan is tempting Jesus to doubt God.
Jesus responds with
In all these temptations, Jesus shows us an example of what it means to obey God and depend on God every time we face temptations.
1 .
We need to depend on God’s word for our provision.
2. We need to decided to serve God alone who alone can satisfy us.
3. We need to allow God to lead us in our ways trusting that God will take care of us.
