Everything we have done so far has prepared us for this point.
We started with the doctrine of the Bible as our source for material about God; we moved to the doctrine of God to lay out who he was and how he is shown in scripture. Then we moved to creation which was typified with the doctrine of man; we then talked about the doctrine of sin and how mankind had fallen and is in a state of alienation. The doctrine of Christ was next, showing us the “who” of Jesus, so we could better understand the “How” of his work. Last week we covered the Holy Spirit and Chipper did a great job to show how the Holy Spirit is involved with the believers life even before the point of salvation and belief. Now we enter into the doctrine of Salvation which is where we see the Holy Spirit’s primary role in our lives.
Historical Overview
This week we will cover, the beginnings of Salvation, and weed through the doctrine of election. Next week we will cover justification and sanctification.
The following week we will cover ecclesiology which is the outworking of the gospel into our everyday life in gospel community.
SEE HOW EVERYTHING BUILDS ON ITSELF TO GET US TO THIS POINT.
If we didn’t lay the foundation of the personhood of God we couldn’t do justice to the doctrine of Salvation.

How is Salvation brought about?

Ransom Theory/Christus Victor

Mark 10:45 NASB95
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Jesus’ Message

1 Timothy 2:6 NASB95
who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.
The early church fathers saw this as the primary metaphor for the atonement.
They saw Satan as having total authority over humanity and so Jesus literally had to buy back humanity from Satan.
We are enslaved to Satan and his power. Christ literally rescued us by becoming incarnate.
Jesus’ Message was repent and believe.
Pauls message was similar
Jesus is the check paid to Satan.
Faith
Romans 10:10 NASB95
for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.

Repentance

2 Corinthians 7:10 NASB95
For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.
this is the message the apostles spoke everywhere, to all people
Acts 17:30 NASB95
“Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
Acts 3:19 NASB95
“Therefore repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord;
Repentance brings refreshing
Repentance is a state of the heart. It is more than just saying it or performing an act to show it. It is a state of the heart.
Matthew 15:18 NASB95
“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
Baptism is an essential sign of Salvation
Baptism is commanded.

Through Faith

Romans 1:17 NASB95
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
Romans 3:26 NASB95
for the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
Romans 3:28 NASB95
For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
Galatians 2:20 NASB95
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

By Grace

By Grace

Ephesians 1:7 NASB95
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Ephesians 2:8 NASB95
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;
Salvation produces transformation
this week we are going to talk about election and predestination, next week we are going to talk about Justification and Sanctification

Election

Everyone believes in election
Romans 8:29–30 NASB95
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
Romans 8:
Romans 8:33 NASB95
Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies;
Ephesians 1:3–4 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love
Ephesians
2 Thessalonians 2:13 NASB95
But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.
John 15:16–17 NASB95
“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you. “This I command you, that you love one another.
Calvinism
Calvinists definition of Election (God’s freedom to choose)
“We call predestination God’s eternal decree, by which he determined with himself what he willed to become of each man.”
If mankind is elect and has no free will unto salvaiton what are the implications?
TULIP (Work through handout)
Favorite Calvinist Verses
John 6:44 NASB95
“No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.
There is Biblical warrant, but what should we think of this.
Acts 13:46–48 NASB95
Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. “For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, That You may bring salvation to the end of the earth.’ ” When the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
Acts 13
Ephesians 1:3–6 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
Ephesians 1:3-6
Election happens when you are in Christ
When: Election takes place in Christ, before the foundation of the world.
Purpose: The purpose is so we might be holy and blameless before God.
Motive: Love
Basis: His will
Romans 9:22–23 NASB95
What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction? And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory,
Romans 9:
Foreknew = God loved them in advanced. It is not simply knowing the future. It is an active knowledge and a bestowal of favor.
Arminian definition of Election/Predestination (Man’s freedom to choose)|
“Predestination is God’s general and gracious plan of saving people by adopting them as children through Christ, based on their response.” - Sawyor, 358
Predestination is based upon God’s passive foreknowledge. On the basis of what God knew a person would decide, their election was given because they would respond in faith.
Romans 8:29 NASB95
For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
1 Peter 1:1–2 NASB95

Arminian Favorites
John 3:16–18 NASB95
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:16
2 Peter 3:9 NASB95
The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

Titus 2:11 NASB95
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men,
Biblical Givens the Calvinist and Arminians should agree upon.
All humans are dead in sin - romans 8:7; Eph 2:1-3
The Holy Spirit must be acting in the lives of believers before their conversion. ;
God desires all to be saved. ; ;
God provides ransom for everyone at the cross.
God tricks Satan into accepting something that he didn’t really owe to Satan.
Jesus is the fishhook that holds the bait.
Christ is the victor over Satan, hell, sin.
This view was held until the middle ages.
What should we think of this? What are the problems?
It captures elements of the Biblical story but does not cover all the texts.
Satan doesn’t have that authority
Our sin is more than just bondage to satan. We are living in rebellion against God.

Satisfaction Theory

How do we hold up both God’s omnipotence and human freedom?
Why doesn’t God elect all to be saved? (Calvinism)
Doesn’t God know how to woo people? (Arminian)
