1. Preeminence: God’s anointed must be your top priority.

1 sam 20:30
1 Samuel 20:30–34 ESV
30 Then Saul’s anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a perverse, rebellious woman, do I not know that you have chosen the son of Jesse to your own shame, and to the shame of your mother’s nakedness? 31 For as long as the son of Jesse lives on the earth, neither you nor your kingdom shall be established. Therefore send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.” 32 Then Jonathan answered Saul his father, “Why should he be put to death? What has he done?” 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to strike him. So Jonathan knew that his father was determined to put David to death. 34 And Jonathan rose from the table in fierce anger and ate no food the second day of the month, for he was grieved for David, because his father had disgraced him.

You must choose between the promotion of self or the advancement of Christ.

Remember the words of John the Baptist.
“He must increase, I must decrease.”
St. Patrick
Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Mark Water, The New Encyclopedia of Christian Quotations (Alresford, Hampshire: John Hunt Publishers Ltd, 2000), 180.
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

You must choose the lordship of Christ over the love of your family.

Family first is not a kingdom value. The bible does not call you to put family first. The bible commands you to put Christ first.
Luke 14
Luke 14:26 ESV
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.
George Barna Research:
For American’s - What is most influential for personal identity?
Family was far and away the top with 62 %
The Country was second with Patriotism soaring past all other categories expect family with 52%
Faith was a distant third with 38% of the influence.
These values do not reflect biblical values.
Patriotism still runs strong in most Americans: More than half of all adults say being an American makes up a lot of their personal identity (52%).
Joseph Hellerman
While religious faith squeaks into the top three, there is a sharp drop from the first two factors in the number of Americans who say their faith is a major part of their identity. A majority of Americans agree their family and their country are central aspects of who they are, fewer than two out of five adults say their religious faith makes up a lot of their personal identity (38%).
Western evangelicals tend to think of Jesus as a personal spiritual trainer with whom we interact one-on-one, leading us to distinguish between loyalty to God and loyalty to God’s family.
Cyprian of Carthage
“He who does not have the church for his mother cannot have God for his Father.”

2. Desperation: Handling things when you have lost your grip.

1 Samuel 21:1–9 ESV
1 Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came to meet David, trembling, and said to him, “Why are you alone, and no one with you?” 2 And David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.’ I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place. 3 Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” 4 And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” 5 And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” 6 So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away. 7 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord. His name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul’s herdsmen. 8 Then David said to Ahimelech, “Then have you not here a spear or a sword at hand? For I have brought neither my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.” 9 And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”

Desperate times lead David to take deceptive actions.

David lied about his purpose. (v. 2 & 8)
David misleads the Philistines
1 Samuel 21:10–14 ESV
10 And David rose and fled that day from Saul and went to Achish the king of Gath. 11 And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” 12 And David took these words to heart and was much afraid of Achish the king of Gath. 13 So he changed his behavior before them and pretended to be insane in their hands and made marks on the doors of the gate and let his spittle run down his beard. 14 Then Achish said to his servants, “Behold, you see the man is mad. Why then have you brought him to me?
David is so desperate the only place he can go is into Philistine territory. He is not safe under the rule of Saul. So he flees. To gath and intends to become a soldier for hire. Yet his plan seem to go south when he is discovered as the great Philistine killer. As a result he pretends to be a made man.

The bible deals with reality, not fantasy.

Remember what that Bible is teaching us.

David is a good man, but he is still just a man.

J.C. Ryle
The best of men are men at best.
The bible is not ultimately pointing us to David as the greatest hero.

David is a sinner in need of a savior.

Psa 51:2-
Psalm 51:2–4 ESV
2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.

CH Spurgeon
I have a great need for Christ; I have a great Christ for my need.
Martin Luther
Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man could stake his life on it a thousand times.
