“Be who God says you are”

Marrying people Wedding - “I now pronounce you mr and mrs”...Jesus has pronounced upon you a title Salt and Light”
In case you missed the memo...there was an historic event in the early hours this morn...Prince Harry got married to the girl from suits
I. Wedding - “I now pronounce you mr and mrs”...Jesus has pronounced upon you a title Salt and Light”
Big Idea: “Be who God has pronounced you to be”
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Context: Here Jesus is describing the reality of the kingdom
The kingdoms of the word say – belief in yourself, don’t be sad! don’t be show weakness, make sure you have it all together on the outside...and people will love you
Jesus’ kingdom says – Humble yourself, weakness is alright, just because you have it, doesn’t mean you have to show it off, and before you worry about the outside...take a look at the inside...and if you do all that, don’t be surprised if they still don’t like you
Jesus’ kingdom says – Humble yourself, weakness is alright, just because you have it, doesn’t mean you have to show it off, and before you worry about the outside...take a look at the inside...and if you do all that, don’t be surprised if they still don’t like you

There are many ways we like to define ourselves as men and it’s usually wrapped in what we do - (I’m a teacher, I’m athlete, I’m a Student)

Understand - If you have placed your faith in Jesus...the titles that he gives you are non negotiable...He’s not saying “I want you to be these things if you want too or if you have time for it” He says “you are these things” so it’s not a matter of “Am I these things” It’s a matter of “Am I walking worthy of my God Pronounced purpose”

Don’t be tasteless

“v. 13 You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses it’s taste, how shall it’s saltiness be restored? it’s no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under foot”

Matthew 5:13 ESV

Don’t be tasteless “v. 13 You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses it’s taste, how shall it’s saltiness be restored? it’s no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under foot”
The phrase “Loses its taste reads more literally “to become defiled or weak” - This is not the scientifically impossible notion of salt becoming flavorless but rather the common problem in the ancient world of salt being mixed with various impure substances and therefore becoming worthless as a preservative.
B. App: This is a common issue for us...when instead of us effecting our environment...our environment infects us...we become diluted and insipid

1. What can dilute us?

Don’t go into hiding

Matthew 5:14–15 ESV
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.
“v.14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill can’t be hidden Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives life to all in the house” 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven

Jesus never intended for us to be hidden...yet sometimes I look at some corners of christian cultures...and I think we might have missed the memo

It was supposed to be a little messy and difficult...Thats why he gave us the spirit
b) It was supposed to be a little messy and difficult...Thats why he gave us the spirit
So we know what Jesus meant, and we know what issue we’re to avoid... but here’s the practical question...

How can we let our light shine before others?

c) We were called to Go – (ESV) 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Question 3: How can we let our light shine before others?
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven
Jesus says “this is what you are (Salt, Light, City) and this is what You need to do Let your light shine for all to see...so that others will see you though it be drawn to me”
Jesus says “this is what you are (Salt, Light, City) and this is what You need to do Let your light shine for all to see...so that others will see you though it be drawn to me”
Here’s the question: How do we let our light shine before others?..He spends the rest of chapters 5-7 explaining....and this is what he says...
Be unexpectedly forgiving - (ESV) 23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

Go beyond whats expected and do whats uncommon

To get offended is human...to stay offended is saltless

Be serious about repentance

Matthew 5:29–30 ESV
If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.
Now this seems like a hyperbolic statement...if not, we’re be a bunch of maimed fools in here...but the point is “Be serious about repentance”
To fall short is human...To not take it seriously is saltless
a) To fall short is human...To not take it seriously is saltless
App: Don’t just acknowledge your sin...Do whatever you need to do to repent of your sin
b) App: Do whatever you need to do to protect your purity

Be uncommonly kind

Matthew 5:38–42 ESV
“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
(ESV) 38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.
Now theres so much to unpack here...but what i’ll say is this...this whole idea of being peaceable or even willing to lose to your enemies goes against every ounce of pride in my being and the fabric of what our society says is manly...
