SLIDE THREE
rom 5.6
Romans 5:6–8 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
++
Usually, we approach the Bible with the intention of learning something.
++
We hope that a new understanding, a fresh nuance… a previously unseen revelation will be given to us…
++
And we want to walk away, with a little excitement over the discovery… our understanding of doctrine is expanded… our perception of truth is clarified… our relationship with God is deepened.
++
AND THAT’S ALWAYS MY HOPE… that you would learn something amazing from the scriptures… because, for those of us who have the HS in our lives… the scriptures are amazing.
++
....THERE IS A SPIRITUAL CONNECTION.. Between the Spirit of God… interpreting the spiritual words of the Bible… TO OUR SPIRIT.
++
When we are in a place where we allow the Spirit to work in this way… and our eyes are opened to His truth… we can relate to those words that David spoke in
++
SLIDE 4
Psalm 119:35 ESV
35 Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.
++
SLIDE 5
psalm 119.
Psalm 119:43 ESV
43 And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in your rules.
++
Psalm 119:48 ESV
48 I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes.
++
SLIDE 6
Psalm 119:97 ESV
97 Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
Ps. 119
++
I hope you have these kinds of experiences with the Scriptures. We might go to them begrudgingly… because our flesh needs to be convinced...
++
But when we are in them, and the Spirit is a work… I hope our learning brings us to a place where…
++
We are delighting in the word… our hope is in it… and we know true love for it..
++
SO YES… WE OPEN OUR BIBLES… AND WE WANT TO LEARN SOMETHINGS… Because, in the learning… there is delight… there is hope… there is love..
++
But today… if you want to… you can learn… -BUT THAT’S NOT GOING TO BE MY INTENTION WITH THIS PASSAGE…
++
Today… I want you to sit back and be utterly amazed at the grace of God.
++
When you visit Niagra Falls… you might read some plaques or take a guided tour… or you might learn that 150,000 /gal of water per second goes over the falls… - you might get some history…
++
But all of that knowledge pales in comparison to the amazement of what you are looking at.... the sounds… the spray of the water… the power… it’s awesome.
++
The same for the Grand Canyon… Any of that information you take in… hides away in a corner of your brain as you are utterly blown away by the view which is before you.
++
There is information in today’s passage.
++
There are verbs to parse and doctrines to affirm..
++
But more than that… THERE IS A TRUTH HERE… THAT CHALLENGES OUR ABILITY TO CONTAIN IT.
++
There is a truth here that confounds our reason and totally destroys our sense of logic… and justice.
++
And it’s truly incredible.
++
This last week I was in NY… for the first time ever. I did a lot of reading before hand… I wanted to understand what I was going into…
++
But the facts didn’t do it justice… The experiences were not always, what I would consider good. I don’t like crowds.. and there were a lot of crowds.. - But I admit… The experience was BIG. Time Square was amazing… even though I didn’t want to stay there very long…
++
The 9/11 memorial was incredible…
++
Seeing the city from the Staten Isl ferry… walking across Central Park…
++
It was an experience. And even as I had no desire beforehand... to ever enter that city… I went… and I allowed myself to experience it… and it did inspire quite a few “wows” out of me.
++
Today… I want you to experience the Word of God… not just learn stuff… but experience the message that is affirmed here..
++
It is a message of unparalleled grace. It is a demonstration of something so confounding… and so unlikely… that we might be tempted… to change it… to warp it… to make it into an idea which is more accessible to us..
++
Some do… just that. But I hope that will not be our experience today.

Romans 5:6 ESV
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
++
We all know, that Jesus died for the sins of mankind.
Rom 5.6
++
But, have you ever taken a moment to consider the economy of that action.
++
Did Jesus invest his ministry and His suffering… and His miraculous resurrection… into a worthy pool of humanity?
++
Centuries upon centuries upon centuries of planning went into this event. When verse 6 tells us… that Christ died for the unglodly - you have to understand… that this was the culmination of something very big.
++
As God was weaving this mission together… nations were birthed… and nations died.. civilizations came into being… which grew in great powers… and then died off into nothing..
++
This amazing plan… culminated in 3 short years of ministry, a death on a cross, and a resurrection 3 days later.
++
When, in , where God shed the blood of the first animal ever killed… and He created from that shed blood… a covering… for sin… - the plan was in action.
++
A plan which… He knew… would lead to more shed blood… to cover more sin… which would one day lead… to the shedding of blood… which would no longer cover sin.. - but, it would wash the sins of humanity away… FOR GOOD. ONCE AND FOR ALL.
++
lays this principle out for us..
++

Hebrews 10:1–2 ESV
1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?
++
Heb 10.1
See what this is saying here? Sacrifices were continually offered… but they were merely a shadow of what was to come.
++
They were the form, but they were not the substance.. THAT’S WHAT THE LAW WAS… in many ways, it projected a perfection that man was unable to meet.
++
People drew near with their sacrifices…but after leaving the temple… and after having a lustful thought.. or having a prideful look… their sacrifice was suddenly null and void to their benefit.
++
So… they had to come back again… with another sacrifice… They weren’t cleansed. They did not overcome their sin.
++
SLIDE 9
Hebrews 10:3–4 ESV
3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Heb 10:3-
++
For centuries, mankind had to learn this lesson. Nothing that they could do on their own would wipe away sin. NOTHING. The sacrifice would be a temporary covering… But that’s it… IT WAS ONLY TEMPORARY.
++
SLIDE 10
Hebrews 10:5–6 ESV
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.
Heb 10:5-
++
God doesn’t want a disobedient people to continue paying their sacrifices to Him. He wants obedience. That’s what He desires..
++
God knew from the beginning, that humanity was not capable of this desirable obedience.... But humanity did not know this. They had to learn the hard way…
++
ISN’T THAT HOW IT ALWAYS IS.... we humans… always have to learn the hard way.
++
You and I… we live on this side of the cross… and we have learned this lesson.
++
We cannot please God in our flesh. We cannot meet His demands for perfection. We can not give him obedience so that He can look upon us and say that HE is pleased.
++
But He wants to be pleased with us. He does not desire sacrifice… HE DESIRES OBEDIENCE.
++
But we can’t give to God what He desires.
++
SLIDE 11
Romans 8:8 ESV
8 Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
++
back to today’s passage… it says:
++
says:… “while we were still weak”.
++
This doesn’t speak of physical weakness… this speaks of moral weakness.
++
This is the state that God finds each of us in..
++
We are a people who are morally incapable of pleasing God… and yet, He focuses the most incredible mission… with the most valuable investment… onto… us!!!
++
Why?
++
Because God wants to be pleased with us.
++
Think about that for a moment. -God wants to be pleased with the lives and actions of His children. That’s what He wants. AND WE CAN’T GIVE IT TO HIM.
++
He loves us. And in spite of what we are able to do… HIS LOVE DRIVES HIM TO BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN OUR MORAL WEAKNESS… -and the perfection that He requires.
++
SO HE DOESN’T WAIT TILL WE DESERVE IT… Because that time, will never come.
++
Christ died for us... the ungodly… while we were still weak. or as the NASB states it… while we were still helpless… or as the NIV states it: “when we were still powerless.
H
++
You and I… we came humbly before the Lord in repentance on the day that we received our gift of salvation. We repented of our sins and received by faith His gift of justification.. - but our humility and repentance did not earn the gift we were given… - It was given solely by grace.
++
- That gift was paid for… when we were at our worst. The work was done… when we were still morally lost… weak.. corrupt and powerless..
++
When we were at our worst, God did the work to give us the gift… that we would receive… when we would finally repent in humility.
++
IN our economy… someone might give their life for a righteous person. If someone is noble and honorable… a person might lay their life down for them.. -
++
But… it’s only done on the basis of worth… -such a person has earned it. That they are worthy of it because of their character and their actions.
++
THAT’S HOW WE OPERATE.
++
But that’s not how God operates..
++
SLIDE 12
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:8-
++
How many people think… that they are too bad? They have done too many bad things. They have walked in wicked ways… So… they think that they can’t come to church… they think that they can’t come before God… they think that they need to get better before they can do any of that.
++
Think about this: I MIGHT FEEL MOTIVATED TO DO SOMETHING FOR YOU, IF YOU SHOW INITIATIVE… if you show.. that you are worth it.
++
I might do the work… make the sacrifice… suffer the time and expense… to give you a gift.... but I won’t do that, till your character motivates that in me.
++
That’s the human sense of justice. And I’m human… and that’s how I operate.
++
So, after I’ve considered you worthy.. and after I make my sacrifices to make a gift for you… and after I give you the gift… then, you would think… that you are okay in my sight…
++
-I must like you..
and you’ll come over to my house and think that I’m okay with you.
++
++
THAT’S HUMAN sentiment. That’s how we operate.
++
But God doesn’t operate that way. He does all the work.. He makes all the sacrifice when we are at our worst. When we are robbing widows for money so we can buy more heroine… God is loving us… and the price is paid.
++
This passage is such an incredible picture of grace.
++
A friend of mine recently posted this quote… which: I think he wrote on his social media… “Jesus’ grace runs downhill, all the way to the bottom, to the places we’re convinced it would never find.”
++
People think: “I’m too bad. God would never take me.”
++
- Hey, it’s too late. He’s already decided that He loves you.. and has made His greatest sacrifice. HE’S ALREADY DONE ALL THE WORK SO THAT HE CAN HAVE YOU…
++
All you have to do… is believe… and receive it.
++

Romans 5:9–10 ESV
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
++
Romans 5:9
Back in -we learned about the wrath of God… it is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men…
++
It is revealed against those who suppress the truth.
++
We learned there… in that study, that wrath speaks of God’s great displeasure. It doesn’t always speak of a response… though it’s implied. -
++
In … God’s wrath led Him to give man up… to give them over to the consequences of their decisions..
++
He gave them the authority to live life according to their own design, rather than His…
++
As a result.. all kinds of corruption, evil, and wickedness fell upon humanity.
++
Here in … we are told… that we are saved from the great displeasure of God.
++
God is now pleased with us… and as a result, instead of suffering the consequences of our broken and fallen estate..
++
He gives us salvation.
++
All of the things listed in the second half of … they lead to death. He says in
++
SLIDE 14
Romans 2:6 ESV
6 He will render to each one according to his works:
++
But not us. verse 9 of today’s passage says… that we are saved from the wrath of God… We are saved from the final destination of our broken flesh.. we are saved from the wages of sin.
++
We might still be broken in the flesh… But we are now free of the eternal and spiritual consequences of those things.
++
SLIDE 15
Romans 5:11 ESV
11 More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
++
This is the transition into the next section of chapter 5…
++
It pertains to both the previous and the following..
++
Reconciliation speaks of restoration… it speaks of a new… friendly relationship… and peace… where before, there was hostility and alienation.
++
This is what we now have with God… - We were once the recipients of His wrath… and by that… we suffered the consequences of mankind running the show their own way… versus God’s way.
++
We are now free of that. We have decided to take these broken lives… and now, live according to God’s plan.. We are able to do this… because God paid the way… -
++
we can now please God… because God is pleased with Jesus… -And Jesus has given to us… HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS…
++
SLIDE 16
Romans 10:4 ESV
4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.
++
We are no longer under the law whereby we seek to gain righteousness… now, righteousness is a gift… in X… to all who believe.
++
SLIDE 17
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
++
God gets what He wants.
++
He wants to be pleased with us… but… since we cannot please Him in our own efforts… - Jesus steps in, and pleases God on our behalf…
++
Jesus knew no sin… but He became sin. He took on the identity of your sin… He took on the identity of my sin… he absorbed it all into HImself… and paid the wages of sin on our behalf.
++
SLIDE 18
Romans 6:23 ESV
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
++
Jesus received those wages… we earned them… He received them… and as a result of all the He did for us..
=
GOD NOW GETS WHAT HE WANTS… He wants to be pleased with us. -He can do that now.
++
YOU KNOW THIS STUFF… you don’t need to learn it… - BUT I DO HOPE… THAT YOU EXPERIENCE IT..
++
I DO HOPE… THAT YOU ARE SO AMAZED BY THE GRACE DEFINED IN TODAY’S PASSAGE… that it would shadow the glory of Niagra Falls… or the Grand Canyon..
==
AND… BECAUSE THE EXPERIENCE OF THIS GRACE IS SO WONDERFUL...
++
I would hope… that you would desire, to learn everything you possible can… about God’s grace.
