Intro:
"Share the gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words."
- Unknown
Me: This phrase is attributed to St. Francis of Assisi, early figure in church history, but he didn’t say it.
It is often invoked by a timid Christian, the just social Gospel believer, and basically everyone who is afraid to verbalize their faith.
I’ve struggled and been on both sides of the extremes.
Do I just show?
Is just going to soup kitchen and serving soup enough?
Do I just shout?
Should I stand on a street corner and scream Jesus saves?
BTW I’ve done just both.
I’ve never seen anyone move into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ by JUST during one of the other.
This quotes sets up non-biblical or extra biblical polar extremes.
On one side you have just showing and the other side you have just shouting.
SHOWING v/s SHOUTING - personify and illustrate.
We: We can’t separate the two because the Bible will not let us.
When is it NECESSARY to verbalize our story of salvation?
What is NECESSARY for someone to accept Jesus?
How do we share the NECESSITY of the God’s story with the people we love?
Here is what we know - as a follow of Jesus there is a desire deep inside of me to Invite somebody we love to encounter Someone we love.
We know that the world desperately need to be introduced to Jesus, and it is absolutely necessary for us to be able to verbalize how His story changed out story.
What is the best method to use?
What is the best message to use?
What if I mess up?
Let’s start with the Bible.
Let’s learn how to share the Gospel in practical ways as a process by studying the methods of our greatest evangelism model Jesus Christ and His early followers.
Through this study I want you to get that you are that someone.
Somebody is crying our for hope and help because they are being harnessed.
They need someone to share the Answer.
You are that someone.
You are that someone (little s) that will introduce them to Someone (big S).
BLESSED ARE THE BALANCED
So let’s reel back in the polar opposites of evangelism to find our SWEET-SPOT.
The place where God uses us to move somebody to Him.
We believe that the greatest gift that a follower of Jesus can give to another person is to introduce them to a God that loves them.
Is it NECESSARY to introduce my friends, family and my co-workers to a God that loves them.
We also know this - It takes guts to talk to people about Jesus.
We can talk to people about anything BUT when we start to share our God story we are paralyzed by fear.
