Isaac is probably a teenager by now in comparison where Ishmael was in the previous chapter.
Testing shows what someone is really like and genuinely involves difficulty or hardships
Trials and testing are for our benefit.
“This was the ultimate test.
Isaac was now everything to Abraham, as God’s call makes clear.
He does not refer to the boy as “Isaac,” but as “your son, your only son, whom you love.”Abraham’s affection had become adoration.
Previously, Abraham’s meaning in life had been dependent on God’s word.
Now it was becoming dependent on Isaac’s love and well being.

Even within the name Moriah there is a hint of salvation which Abraham will pick up later when he states that the Lord will provide, see.

Abraham obeyed the Lord.
We don’t have any questioning or doubts like with Ishmael and sending him away in the previous chapter.
He got his supplies and went to the “place” that the Lord had told him.
This is a holy place or sanctuary.

3 days was normal to prepare for a significant event.
It’s what Israel initially requests from Pharaoh in Exodus and is how long the Lord gives them to prepare for His meeting with them on Mount Sinai.
Only Abraham goes up the mountain (parallel to Moses) and astoundingly states that “we’ll come back to you.”
Abraham believed that if the Lord required a sacrifice of his son of promise that He would be immediately resurrected in order to fulfill the promise of God.
Isaac takes the wood on his back—-symbolizing his certain death on that wood (Jesus carrying the cross of his back).

Amazing trust on Isaac’s part is displayed as the father and son go up the mountain together.
Isaac’s question becomes the central question of the OT one that JOhn the Baptist answers in the New.

Abraham continued in obedience and binds Isaac who himself complies in complete obedience as an unblemished sacrifice.

Abraham “looks up” again but this time sees a ram caught.
Here the ram is offered as a substitute for Isaac.
The Lord will provide—Moriah—Moses is writing to a people who have just sacrificed a lamb in order to save their first born sons and who have approached a mountain to meet with the Lord.
It would be on another mountain that the Lord would provide forgiveness for our sins once and for all.
We call it Calvary.
3. We must believe in the seed of Abraham.
V16-18 is the only promise to Abraham explicitly containing a divine oath.
The Lord takes the promise of , the covenant in , the confirmation in and here gives a divine oath.
The fulfillment of these promises is clearly connected to the obedience of Abraham.
“Human obedience does not enable something other than can come from God’s promise; rather Abraham’s actions become a further grounding for the promise alongside God’s free decision.”
The original promises made by the Lord are now reworded as through the grace of the Lord and the obedience of Abraham.
The enemies of the Lord will not be able to stop this plan and as indicated in the Lord will use Israel to drive out his enemies.
