THE BOOK OF MATTHEW
THE BOOK OF MATTHEW
This New Series is entitled JESUSPEOPLE
In this series we will venture to identify what it is to be called a People of Christ
What does it mean to be a Christian?
What does it mean to follow after Jesus?
What does it mean to be JESUSPEOPLE
The Book of Matthew, is a historical document written by a Tax Collector who lived during Jesus’ Time.
Levi, was hated by the Jews because of His allegiance to the Roman Government
He was fluent in Greek and Hebrew
But he was a Socially Conflicted
He was considered a thief and a traitor by his Jewish Friends
Employed by the people his family hated
But wasn’t really accepted at his workplace
He was too Secular for the Jews and too Jewish for the Romans.
This man couldn't really be trusted by anybody
If you would ask him who his friends were, He would probably look at you a little perplexed.
He begins his account not in some extravagant way
But a real simple and concise way
A Historical way
A way that paints a picture of the humanity Jesus was about to step into
Normally, when you think about Jesus, and look at the text that defines Him
We are quick to admit that He was fully God
We can't help but think about His Holiness
We cant help but think about the Mighty Works He performed
We cant help but agree with what people said about Him
However, there is another side of Jesus that makes him unlike any other god on this earth
And though this is all true, we have the flip side to that truth:
There is no other God on this earth
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
There is no other God on this earth
There is no other God on this earth, that had the Fullness of the Godhead in Him, yet tasted the pain and the sting of death, for you and me.
What we fail to realize is that this world sees gods as immortal.
But my God became mortal to prove His Immortality He tasted Death in order that we may live No other God has relegated himself to feel and taste the curse of humanity in order to set humanity free.
No other God chose to do something about our depravity No other God chose a more messed up Generational Line to come through If you were God and hd the ability to chose a family to be born into What would that look like?
Rich, Poor, Drama Filled, Drama Less, Royalty, Peasant You are God, you have the ability to chose what that looks like Lets take a look at the Lineage of Jesus and take a look at how God chose to come into this world
That had the Fullness of the Godhead in Him,
Yet knew what it was like to be human
Who was tempted and tested in all things
Yet lived into the sinless expectation of a Messiah
Who knew what its like to hunger
While having the ability to turn rocks into bread
Who knew what it was like to have perfect fellowship with the Father
Yet left the comfort of eternity
To live a sinless human life
And eventually old himself accountable for you and me.
We fully agree that He is God, but sometimes we forget about the reality of his humanity
Have you ever thought about this
If you were God, and you had the choice to be born into any family
In fact there is no other God who did what Jesus did
What would you chose?
The God of the Bible, became mortal to prove His Immortality
What type of family unit would you come into?
He tasted Death in order that we may live
The Godhead had that choice
It’s their story
No other God has relegated himself to feel and taste the curse of humanity in order to set humanity free.
SO WHAT DID THAT LOOK LIKE?
No other God chose to do something about our depravity
He could have chosen
PRAY
No other God chose a more messed up Generational Line to come through
THINK ABOUT IT
If you were God and had the ability to chose a family to be born into
Levi, who was later renamed Matthew by Jesus,
What would that look like?
Rich, Poor, Drama Filled, Drama Less, Royalty, Peasant
Begins his account by stating exactly who Jesus is, to the People He came to save
You are God, you have the ability to chose what that looks like
He came to save
He says;
Lets take a look at the Lineage of Jesus and take a look at how God chose to come into this world
He states that this Book would be a study of the way that God decided to come into a world not to condemn it, but to save it
“This is the Book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ Who is the Son of David, the Son of Abraham”
He says This is the Book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Who is the Son of David, the Son of Abraham
Two claims that were aggressively positioned to proclaim the Messianic Fullfilment through Jesus Christ
For Jesus to be called the Son of David was a direct claim that Jesus was a the Messiah
It goes all the way back to the promise made to David in 2 Samuel Chapter 7
Furthermore, Levi goes deeper by calling Jesus the Son of Abraham
Which was a proclamation that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Promise made to Abraham in
That through Abraham’s seed, Jesus, all the nations would be blessed.
These two claims would be extremely familiar to the Jewish Audience
In fact, their entire history was centered around the fulfillment of both of these claims
When Matthew informs the reader
He is doing so in a way that leaves no doubt about who Jesus was.
So what did His lineage look like?
If Jesus was Messiah, He had to have come through a specific lineage
To the New School, He is the fulfillment of the promise to King David
To the World, Jesus is the Long Awaited Messiah So what did His lineage look like?
If Jesus was Messiah, He had to have come through a specific lineage Legally, it would have to be traced through his earthly father, Joseph.
However, just in case you wanted a bloodline lineage, you can look at the Gospel of Luke where we find Jesus’ lineage through Mary.
Again, I ask you, if you were God, what would your Family Tree look like?
What hereditary issues would you have to deal with?
How would your genetic history tell your story?

How would your genetic history guide you?
