THE BOOK OF MATTHEW

THE BOOK OF MATTHEW
This New Series is entitled JESUSPEOPLE
In this series we will venture to identify what it is to be called a People of Christ
What does it mean to be a Christian?
What does it mean to follow after Jesus?
What does it mean to be JESUSPEOPLE
The Book of Matthew, is a historical document written by a Tax Collector who lived during Jesus’ Time.
Levi, was hated by the Jews because of His allegiance to the Roman Government
He was fluent in Greek and Hebrew
But he was a Socially Conflicted
He was considered a thief and a traitor by his Jewish Friends
Employed by the people his family hated
But wasn’t really accepted at his workplace
He was too Secular for the Jews and too Jewish for the Romans.
This man couldn't really be trusted by anybody
If you would ask him who his friends were, He would probably look at you a little perplexed.
He begins his account not in some extravagant way
But a real simple and concise way
A Historical way
A way that paints a picture of the humanity Jesus was about to step into
Normally, when you think about Jesus, and look at the text that defines Him
We are quick to admit that He was fully God
We can't help but think about His Holiness
We cant help but think about the Mighty Works He performed
We cant help but agree with what people said about Him
However, there is another side of Jesus that makes him unlike any other god on this earth
And though this is all true, we have the flip side to that truth:
There is no other God on this earth
“For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
2 Corinthians 5:21 NKJV
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
There is no other God on this earth
There is no other God on this earth, that had the Fullness of the Godhead in Him, yet tasted the pain and the sting of death, for you and me. What we fail to realize is that this world sees gods as immortal. But my God became mortal to prove His Immortality He tasted Death in order that we may live No other God has relegated himself to feel and taste the curse of humanity in order to set humanity free. No other God chose to do something about our depravity No other God chose a more messed up Generational Line to come through If you were God and hd the ability to chose a family to be born into What would that look like? Rich, Poor, Drama Filled, Drama Less, Royalty, Peasant You are God, you have the ability to chose what that looks like Lets take a look at the Lineage of Jesus and take a look at how God chose to come into this world
That had the Fullness of the Godhead in Him,
Yet knew what it was like to be human
Who was tempted and tested in all things
Yet lived into the sinless expectation of a Messiah
Who knew what its like to hunger
While having the ability to turn rocks into bread
Who knew what it was like to have perfect fellowship with the Father
Yet left the comfort of eternity
To live a sinless human life
And eventually old himself accountable for you and me.
We fully agree that He is God, but sometimes we forget about the reality of his humanity
Have you ever thought about this
If you were God, and you had the choice to be born into any family
In fact there is no other God who did what Jesus did
What would you chose?
The God of the Bible, became mortal to prove His Immortality
What type of family unit would you come into?
He tasted Death in order that we may live
The Godhead had that choice
It’s their story
No other God has relegated himself to feel and taste the curse of humanity in order to set humanity free.
SO WHAT DID THAT LOOK LIKE?
No other God chose to do something about our depravity
He could have chosen
Matthew 1:1–17 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham: 2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers. 3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4 Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6 and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah. 7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa. 8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah. 9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah. 11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon. 12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ. 17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
PRAY
No other God chose a more messed up Generational Line to come through
THINK ABOUT IT
If you were God and had the ability to chose a family to be born into
Matthew 1:1 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
Levi, who was later renamed Matthew by Jesus,
What would that look like?
Rich, Poor, Drama Filled, Drama Less, Royalty, Peasant
Begins his account by stating exactly who Jesus is, to the People He came to save
You are God, you have the ability to chose what that looks like
He came to save
He says;
Lets take a look at the Lineage of Jesus and take a look at how God chose to come into this world
He states that this Book would be a study of the way that God decided to come into a world not to condemn it, but to save it
“This is the Book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ Who is the Son of David, the Son of Abraham”
He says This is the Book of the Genealogy of Jesus Christ
Who is the Son of David, the Son of Abraham
Two claims that were aggressively positioned to proclaim the Messianic Fullfilment through Jesus Christ
For Jesus to be called the Son of David was a direct claim that Jesus was a the Messiah
It goes all the way back to the promise made to David in 2 Samuel Chapter 7
Furthermore, Levi goes deeper by calling Jesus the Son of Abraham
Which was a proclamation that Jesus was the fulfillment of the Promise made to Abraham in
That through Abraham’s seed, Jesus, all the nations would be blessed.
These two claims would be extremely familiar to the Jewish Audience
In fact, their entire history was centered around the fulfillment of both of these claims
When Matthew informs the reader
He is doing so in a way that leaves no doubt about who Jesus was.
So what did His lineage look like?
If Jesus was Messiah, He had to have come through a specific lineage
To the New School, He is the fulfillment of the promise to King David
To the World, Jesus is the Long Awaited Messiah So what did His lineage look like? If Jesus was Messiah, He had to have come through a specific lineage Legally, it would have to be traced through his earthly father, Joseph. However, just in case you wanted a bloodline lineage, you can look at the Gospel of Luke where we find Jesus’ lineage through Mary. Again, I ask you, if you were God, what would your Family Tree look like? What hereditary issues would you have to deal with? How would your genetic history tell your story?
Legally, it would have to be traced through his earthly father, Joseph.
However, just in case you wanted a bloodline lineage, you can look at the Gospel of Luke where we find Jesus’ lineage through Mary.
Again, I ask you, if you were God, what would your Family Tree look like?
What hereditary issues would you have to deal with?
How would your genetic history guide you?
What baggage would you carry throughout your entire life?
LETS LOOK AT SOME OF THE CONTROVERSIAL FIGURES THAT WERE IN THE LINE OF JESUS
Matthew 1:2–6 NKJV
2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.

Lets start at Abraham ()

Abraham was a liar and had control issues
As He sojourned to the land that God had promised Him
Though his faith was strong in the fact that God would lead and guide him
When it came to facing secular rulers
He asked his wife to say that she was his sister in order to protect her.
Though it was partially true, we know a Partial Truth is a Full lie
The reality was that Abraham’s trust in God was overcome by his fear of man.
Though Abraham would be blessed
Though the promised Messiah would come through His lineage
His fear of man would be passed down to his son Isaac
Which brings up another point
Remember How God promised Abraham that he would have children even at his old age?
Remember how his wife Sarai laughed at him and the promise of God?
How did Abraham respond to a promise that seemed impossible and one which his own wife laughed at?
He took things into his own hands and slept with Hagar, his wife’s maidservant

What about Isaac? ()

Well, because sin has the tendency to be generational.
Isaac also struggled with the fear of man.
The irony of it all, He lied about Rebekah being his wife to a king just like his father

Lets talk about Jacob ()

Remember Jacob, the evil twin?
Remember how Esau, the Ginger, Isaac’s first born son sold his birthright for a bowl of soup?
Even though, he had conned his brother into receiving his birthright
Jacob didn't stop there
He then convinced his dying father to give him the position of Heir over his brother Esau with the help of his mom
Though it seemed good, it was deceiving and not a good look for Jesus
Jacob would in turn be deceived by his father in law a few years later
He would work for 7 years in order to marry his love Rachel
But instead would be given Leah and be made to work another 7 years to have Rachel as well.
14 years of service for 2 wives who would contend with one another and who were sisters at that.
Here is where it gets gnarly:
So far we have Truth Altering, Man Fearing, Deceitful, Polygamist Lineage
So far we have Truth Altering, Man Fearing, Deceitful, Polygamist men Now, Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar Whats so gnarly about that? Judah had a son named Er He took a wife for Er, his firstborn, whose name was Tamar Er was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed Him. And now, Tamar is left as a widow. One day, Judah realizes that His firstborn will not have an heir So he tells his son Onan to go into Tamar so that his brothers lineage would continue. He sleeps with Tamar but prevents her from becoming pregnant This didn't please God, so He slays Onan also. Two men are now dead and we haven't even got to the gnarly part of this story Judah, then sends Tamar to her fathers house and asks her to wait for his third son to grow up in order that he may continue the lineage As it turns out, we read that Judah never intended to send his son to her Tamar, then goes to her fathers house and waits A few years later, she finds out that Timnath is grown up and she puts off her widows garments and dresses herself with every intent to be married that day. Now, when Judah saw her, he didn't recognize her and actually thought she was a prostitute Judah, was attracted to her, and actually asks to purchase some time with her They agreed that it would be at the cost of a goat. A goat that Judah didn't have So she asks for some collateral He gives her his signet ring, bracelets, and his staff 3 months later, Tamar is pregnant News gets back to Judah He condemns her to death, but they cant find her. Finally, she sends a messenger to him saying “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, “Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.” it was then that Judah realized what he had done, and he knew her never again The damage was done, and guess what, Tamar had twins. Now, what about Boaz? & 6 Boaz was the son of Salmon and Rahab Rahab had a interesting occupation She was a Harlot But a good harlot, if thats a thing She actually helped the spies that Joshua sent to spy out Jericho If you've read the book of Ruth, you come to find that Boaz is a picture of Jesus He is the Kinsmen Redeemer Who begets Obed through Ruth. Then Obed begets Jesse and Jesse has a son named David. Lets look at King David Of whom, Jesus would be called his son.

Now, Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar

Whats so gnarly about that?
Judah had a son named Er
He took a wife for Er, his firstborn, whose name was Tamar
Er was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord killed Him.
And now, Tamar is left as a widow.
One day, Judah realizes that His firstborn will not have an heir
So he tells his son Onan to go into Tamar so that his brothers lineage would continue.
He sleeps with Tamar but prevents her from becoming pregnant
This didn't please God, so He slays Onan also.
Two men are now dead and we haven't even got to the gnarly part of this story
Judah, then sends Tamar to her fathers house and asks her to wait for his third son to grow up in order that he may continue the lineage
As it turns out, we read that Judah never intended to send his son to her
Tamar, then goes to her fathers house and waits
A few years later, she finds out that Timnath is grown up
So she puts off her widows garments and dresses herself with every intent to be married that day.
Now, when Judah saw her, he didn't recognize her and actually thought she was a prostitute
Judah, was attracted to her, and actually asks to purchase some time with her
They agreed that it would be at the cost of a goat.
A goat that Judah didn't have
So she asks for some collateral
He gives her his signet ring, bracelets, and his staff
3 months later, Tamar is pregnant
News gets back to Judah
He condemns her to death, but they cant find her.
Finally, she sends a messenger to him saying
Genesis 38:25 NKJV
25 When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, “Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.”
It was then that Judah realized what he had done, and he knew her never again
“By the man to whom these belong, I am with child.” And she said, “Please determine whose these are—the signet and cord, and staff.”
It was then that Judah realized what he had done, and he knew her never again The damage was done, and guess what, Tamar had twins.
The damage was done, and guess what, Tamar had twins, Perez & Hezron , who grew up in a single parent home

Now, what about Boaz?

Boaz was the son of Salmon and Rahab
Rahab had a interesting occupation
She was a Harlot
But a good harlot, if thats a thing
She actually helped the spies that Joshua sent to spy out Jericho
Her whole family was saved because of how God used her.
If you've read the book of Ruth, you come to find that Boaz is a picture of Jesus
He is the Kinsmen Redeemer Who begets Obed through Ruth.
Then Obed begets Jesse and Jesse has a son named David.
Lets look at King David Of whom, Jesus would be called his son.
Matthew 1:6–11 NKJV
6 and Jesse begot David the king.
Genesis 1:
Genesis 1:6–11 NKJV
6 Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” 7 Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. 9 Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so.

King David begot Solomon,

The wisest man that ever lived on this earth
But who was Solomons Mom? The Wife of Uriah?
Aka Bethsheeba who was bathing by her lonesome when David spotted her
Her husband was out on the battlefield
While his boss, the king, King David, slept with his wife
When King David found out that Bethsheeba was pregnant he sought to cover up his sin by doing the unthinkable
He sends a messenger to the battlefield to move Uriah to the frontline
In other words, to be the first in line to die in war.
This is the same David, King David, the one through which the Messiah would come.
Hence, one of the names of Jesus, Son of David
David ends up taking Bathsheeba as his wife
His son was born, but the Lord allowed him to die of sickness
So David, comforts his wife, and goes into her
She has another son whose name is Solomon
Even though Solomon was the wisest man to ever live on this earth
His predecessors fluctuated from good to bad to good
A roller coaster of bad and good kings
Rehoboam, Abijah were bad kings
Asa & Jehoshaphath were good kings
Joram was bad
Uzziah and Jotham were good kings
Ahaz introduced Child Sacrifice to Demons
Then Ahaz begot Hezekiah, and he was a good king
Hezekiah begot Mannasseh who got into a Mess
Mannasseh got into witchcraft and demon worship
Amon was also evil
Josiah was probably the best king in this sequence
But then Jeconiah was evil
After Jeconiah, they were all deported to Babylon where they would live for 7 years
READ THE FOLLOWING VERSES
Matthew 1:12–17 NKJV
Matthew 1
After reading this account, one could just throw in the towel
God himself,
Seeing the controversy,
Allowing men to do what was right in their own eyes
You would think that he would have just scratched his plans
You would think he would have started over
You would think he would have started over
42 Generations of falling short of His expectation
If you were a Jew during this time, you would think to yourself
No wonder, Joseph’s natural inclination was to have nothing to do with this child.
“Is this really who God has called us to be?”
“Is this really who God has called us to be?” “An enslaved people” “A Spiritually Depraved People” “A People who have lost their vision and ability to see the unseen” Nevertheless, the 14 generations before, during and after the captivity tell the story of Grace When Joseph would be considered the Father of Jesus A Father who considered his wife and adulteress A Father who would struggle with insecurity because he knew deep down inside that Jesus was not his son.
No wonder he wanted to put Mary away silently.
“An enslaved people”
“A Spiritually Depraved People”
“A People who have lost their vision and ability to see the unseen”
Nevertheless, the 14 generations before, during and after the captivity tell the story of Grace
When Joseph would be considered the Father of Jesus
A Father who considered his wife and adulteress
A Father who would struggle with insecurity because he knew deep down inside that Jesus was not his son.
This Child, in looking at his humanity
Would have the same proclivities as every human being
Would have the same desires of every human
Would carry the baggage of his lineage
A lineage that set him up for failure
“PASTOR HECTOR, I THOUGHT THIS WAS THE GOOD NEWS
THIS ISN’T GOOD NEWS
IN FACT, THIS IS DEFEATING”

SO WHAT’S THE GOOD NEWS?

THE GOOD NEWS IS THIS
THAT JESUS, THOUGH HAVING THE BAGGAGE OF HIS LINEAGE ENCOURAGING HIM TO SIN
THAT EVEN THOUGH HIS FAMILY TREE POINTED TO DEFEAT
THAT EVEN THOUGH HIS LINEAGE SET HIM UP TO FAIL
JESUS, IN HIS HUMANITY, STOPPED THE STREAK OF SIN.
JESUS, BEING FULLY MAN, WAS TEMPTED IN ALL THINGS ANF YET WITHOUT SIN.
JESUS, THE LAMB OF GOD, WAS BROUGHT TO THE CROSS BLAMELESS.
JUST LIKE JESUS STOPPED THE STREAK OF SIN IN HIS LINEAGE
TO PRESENT A SUFFICIENT SACRIFICE FOR US
BECAUSE OF THE BEAUTIFUL NAME OF JESUS
HOW MUCH MORE, CAN HE DO, WHEN WE SURRENDER OUR LIVES TO HIM.
BECAUSE OF THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST
HOW MUCH MORE CAN HE DO, WHEN WE ADMIT THAT SIN HAS RUN GAME ON OUR LIVES.
WE CAN NOW MOVE FORWARD IN VICTORY
SIN HAS BEEN RENDERED POWERLESS
HOW MUCH MORE, WHEN WE REPENT, AND ASK FOR FORGIVENESS?
SIN’S PENALTY HAS BEEN DISARMED
SIN DOESN’T HAVE TO CAUSE PAIN ANYMORE
WE CAN KNOW MOVE FORWARD DESPITE WHAT OUR PAST TELLS US WE SHOULD BE.
WE MUST REMEMBER
THE CROSS IS THE POINT OF REFERENCE
EVERY SINFUL STREAK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO STOP
Stopped Sin in its track
THAT AT THE CROSS
THAT THE SACRIFICIAL LIFESTYLE THAT JESUS LIVED OUT
Stopped the selfish streak that humanity was on
THE TRACK RECORD OF SIN
HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE RENDERED POWERLESS
THE CROSS IS THE POINT OF REFERENCE
WHERE THE SINFUL HISTORY OF OUR DNA CAN BE SILENCED
YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO BE AN ALCHOLIC
DOMESTIC ABUSE DOESNT HAVE TO RUN IN YOUR FAMILY
OPIOD ADDICTION CAN END
THERE IS LIFE ON THIS SIDE OF THE CROSS.
THE QUESTION IS
WE CAN LOOK AT
ARE WE COMMUNICATING THIS POWERFUL MESSAGE?
OUR TRUTH ALTERING
ADULTEROUS
SIN SNIFFING
SIN CONCEALING
SINFUL NATURE
AND STOP ITS UNDEFEATED STREAK BY SURRENDERING TO JESUS
OR
OPIOD DEPENDENCY
OPIOD DEPENDENCY
CANCER
BUT NOT ONLY THAT
WE CAN
