Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” And the Lord said to him, “Rise and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul, for behold, he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints at Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of mine to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel. For I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; and taking food, he was strengthened.
For some days he was with the disciples at Damascus.
Like a swallow or a crane I chirp;
I moan like a dove.
My eyes are weary with looking upward.
O Lord, I am oppressed; be my pledge of safety!

Saul is praying. (v.11)
For thus the Lord said to me,
“As a lion or a young lion growls over his prey,
and when a band of shepherds is called out against him
he is not terrified by their shouting
or daunted at their noise,
so the Lord of hosts will come down
to fight on Mount Zion and on its hill.
Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law, while the people remained in their places. They read from the book, from the Law of God, clearly, and they gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading.
Ezra 8:
Of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men. Of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him 80 men.
Saul is praying. (v.11)
And when this letter has been read among you, have it also read in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.
Nehemiah 8
Ananias is questioning. (v.13)
This man’s reputation is terrible. He known by many people to have harmed many saints. He is not someone I want to go and hang out with. In fact, he has the “authority” to arrest me. My life could be in danger approaching this man.
Go hang out with Osama Bin Laden, I have a message for him. He is expecting you to come and lay hands on him to help him see again.
God is working. (v.15)
This man (grace!) is my chosen instrument to take my name to Gentiles, kings, and Israelites.
God desires for His name to be known everywhere, by everyone.
Gentiles- Those outside of the covenant community.
Kings- Those in authority and with the power.
Israelites- God’s own people.
Saul has been chosen to be a name bringer.
1 Timothy 1:
I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Saul has been chosen to be a name bringer.
To display his perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Jesus. That’s why Jesus pursues and saves and transforms and renames guys like Saul. For us.
Saul has been chosen to be a name bringer.
Saul has been chosen to be a name bringer.
Saul has been chosen to be a name bringer to all kinds of people.
This same name Saul has been chosen to carry to the Gentiles and kings and Israelites is the same name that will call Saul to suffer.
Disciples share with and suffer for the name of Jesus.
Extra surprise for Saul (besides the sight regained which was given in the vision per verse 12): he was to be filled with the Holy Spirit at this moment (v.17).
Saul was baptized- received his new identity in Christ.
Saul eats. This is in the Scriptures for a reason. Sometimes, we need some simple food to regain strength. And he remained there in Damascus for some time.
Saul is given a new identity before he is given a new job.
Saul being chosen continues the church’s mission to bring the name of God and witness to his salvation through Jesus Christ.
Saul’s mission will be aimed internationally.
Before Saul is to minister to the world, he is to be ministered to by Ananias.
We are converted for a commission.
