What Jesus Heard
John the Baptist Was Killed
His death was steeped in a brine of immorality
Herod arrested John for saying it was unlawful for him to have Herodias (Herod’s brother’s wife)
Herod hated John the Baptist so much that he wanted to kill him
He was afraid because the people thought John was a prophet
He go so excited over a dance the Herodias’s daughter did for him he promised anything and the daughter asked for John’s head.
Herod’s desire the daughter of the one he had but shouldn’t have was so great that it overcame his fear of the people.
- and we call today’s world perverse.
Herod thought Jesus was John the Baptist up from the dead
Same hate existed for Jesus that Herod had for John
Light to the day
John the Baptist considered a prophet by the people
Thus there was great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them. 1 Macabees 9:27
History - God’s chosen people in captivity from one government to another for 400 years.
Previous 2 governments allow freedom of religion as long as it doesn’t interfere with governmental authority
With that freedom of religion come a returning to a worship of the one true God and a new found hope of a coming Messiah.
To top it off - the first prophet in 400 years
This prophet is pointing to the miracle maker Jesus as the Messiah.
2 people drawing great crowds for the one true God - and one dies.

His Cousin was killed and he was in danger
He knew crowds would come after him and he wanted to prepare
He wanted to prepare his disciples.

We might not even believe that Christ can do something for ours or our loved one’s situations.

We might have looked at whats in our hands and said my talents, my skills are barely good enough for me.
We, like the boy in this story, might think we don’t even count.

3 When Jesus heard what had happened,
Story of Herod beheading John the Baptist
he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
One must remember the culture of the time
John was considered by many to be a prophet v. 5
First one in 400 years
Macabees (not scripture but gives us and idea of how horrible the Jewish people saw the time - Not since the prophets stopped speaking
Sinful King and kingdom generation after generation finally the punishment came and they were enslaved and apparently God goes silent
Until John - his appearance on the scene give great hope to a people oppressed by an army that had taken over the known world.

This kept Herod from killing John because of fear of the people
Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.
14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.15
As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.
Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”16
Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away.
You give them something to eat.”17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.18
“Bring them here to me,” he said.
19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.
Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves.
Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.
20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.
21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
