The Throne of Our Lives

Declaration of Independence - Nobody has the right to tell me what to do, what to believe, who to serve, what is right, what is wrong.

Everyone is Serving Something

Matthew 6:22–24 NIV
“The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness! “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Matthew 6:22-24
Either He is the King or something else is.

What is Important to the King and What the King Wants from His People.

Matthew 14:13–21 NIV
When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, “This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.” Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat.” “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered. “Bring them here to me,” he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
Matthew14

Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “You have said so,” Jesus replied.
Matthew 27:11
Communion
Matthew 26:29 NIV
I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
Matthew 26:29

When reading this story we must stay under that light

Keep It in Context

Sub 1
What Jesus Heard
John the Baptist Was Killed
His death was steeped in a brine of immorality
Herod arrested John for saying it was unlawful for him to have Herodias (Herod’s brother’s wife)
Herod hated John the Baptist so much that he wanted to kill him
He was afraid because the people thought John was a prophet
He go so excited over a dance the Herodias’s daughter did for him he promised anything and the daughter asked for John’s head.
Herod’s desire the daughter of the one he had but shouldn’t have was so great that it overcame his fear of the people. - and we call today’s world perverse.
Herod thought Jesus was John the Baptist up from the dead
Same hate existed for Jesus that Herod had for John
Light to the day
John the Baptist considered a prophet by the people
Thus there was great distress in Israel, such as had not been since the time that prophets ceased to appear among them. 1 Macabees 9:27
History - God’s chosen people in captivity from one government to another for 400 years. Previous 2 governments allow freedom of religion as long as it doesn’t interfere with governmental authority
With that freedom of religion come a returning to a worship of the one true God and a new found hope of a coming Messiah.
To top it off - the first prophet in 400 years
This prophet is pointing to the miracle maker Jesus as the Messiah.
2 people drawing great crowds for the one true God - and one dies.
Sub 3
Jesus leaves to go to solitary place
His Cousin was killed and he was in danger
He knew crowds would come after him and he wanted to prepare
He wanted to prepare his disciples.

Who He Is and What He wants

Our King Has Compassion

Despite his felt sorrow
Despite his desire to find solitude
He compassion to fill a need in others is greater than any personal needs and wants

His Desire is to Give Us Real Purpose

Luke says the Twelve - send them away
Jesus says you feed them
Sub 1
His desire is always to use us as part of His plan.. not because he needs us but because we need Him

He Can Use the Least

The boy - not even counted in the 5000
The disciples not able to see the potential of miracle.
The tools - loaves and fishes - enough to take care of one person — not approximately 10,000

Something From Everything

We might not even believe that Christ can do something for ours or our loved one’s situations.
We might have determined that the world should be able to take care of itself.
We might have looked at whats in our hands and said my talents, my skills are barely good enough for me.
We, like the boy in this story, might think we don’t even count.
Pish Posh. I might not count. My tools might be lacking. Sometimes my attitude isn’t what it should be. But ALL THE TIME Jesus is my king that loves me and with Him we are what the world needs to get healthy.

3 When Jesus heard what had happened,
Story of Herod beheading John the Baptist
he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.
One must remember the culture of the time
John was considered by many to be a prophet v. 5
First one in 400 years
Macabees (not scripture but gives us and idea of how horrible the Jewish people saw the time - Not since the prophets stopped speaking
Sinful King and kingdom generation after generation finally the punishment came and they were enslaved and apparently God goes silent
Until John - his appearance on the scene give great hope to a people oppressed by an army that had taken over the known world. — Messiah must be coming.
This kept Herod from killing John because of fear of the people
