Intro
Background: Roman victory parades
Colossians 2:15 ESV
He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Aroma of Christ
We have nothing of ourselves to promote - Jesus won the victory!
Ephesians 5:2 ESV
And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
We share with others the knowledge of Jesus and His victory over sin (clearly & plainly - v. 17)
Jesus is the One who conquers hearts
The more we are captivated by Christ, the more we spread Christ!
To God
“Thanks be to God” = Rejoice in God, Give credit to God; It is God’s glory that motivates us! ()
Our focus is pleasing God, not man.
We can only please God b/c of Jesus
We live Coram Deo!! (leads us last point - everywhere)
Everywhere (wherever, whoever)
We are salt and light wherever we go. (Matt. 5:13-16)
We scatter the seed everywhere, and let God give increase
1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
“Death to Death” / “Life to Life” - the way we view Christ, Some view Him as dead, and it leads to their death. Others recognize He is alive and the Source of life, and it leads to life.
Whatever the results of preaching the gospel, God is pleased!!
However one responds to the aroma of Christ on the cross, God is still pleased with His Son’s sacrifice!!
Paul alluding to Moses in v. 16b?
The advance of the gospel is irresistible - like a Roman Triumph. Nothing can stop it!!

Notes
Theme of victory through suffering - God uses it to promote the gospel (one of main themes throughout 2 Cor.)
knowledge of God reflected in face of Christ -
2 Corinthians 4:6 ESV
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
incense was offered to “gods” though it was smelt by people
We will give an answer to God
2 Corinthians 5:10–11 ESV
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others. But what we are is known to God, and I hope it is known also to your conscience.
2Cor.
We are Christ’s soldiers. We are also His conquered captives. And we are the incense. (mixed metaphor);

God has triumphed over him, and now God triumphs through him

Famous Roman Triumphs
Procession devoted to Aemilius (lasted 3 days)
The Triumph of L. Mummius over the conquest of Corinth - A.D. 51 (shortly before this epistle was written - A.D. 55-57)
Widely known in Corinth
Ended at The Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus? At the Capitoline Hill they stopped and dragged some of the captives aside and slaughtered them before offering sacrifices.

If we preach Christ crucified, we cannot expect to be crowned with glory by those who crucified Jesus.
The greatest of all victories is the victory over sin!!!
Paul has been captured by love.
The New American Commentary: 2 Corinthians (1) The Nature of Apostolic Ministry (2:14–3:6)

Martin Luther said: “God creates out of nothing. Therefore until a man is nothing, God can make nothing out of him.

The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 10: Romans through Galatians a. The Privilege of Apostolic Service (2:14–17)

Christ undertook a battle not rightly his; we share in a triumph not rightly ours

Mention Paul’s journey’s “everywhere”
Examples of those who reject:
Gerasenes who asked Jesus to get away from them (vs. Gerasene man)
Ministry needs to be focused on Christ, not gimmicks or obsessed with techniques and tricks. God is in control of the results, we can’t guarantee any results with anything we do. (We can preach and pray)
The Expositor’s Bible Commentary, Volume 10: Romans through Galatians a. The Privilege of Apostolic Service (2:14–17)

As the bee reserves her honey for her owner and her sting for others, so the words of the Torah are an elixir of life for Israel and a deadly poison to the nations of the world” (Deuteronomy Rabbah 1.5, cited by T.W. Manson; see notes).

he sends his apostles to bind, as well as to loose, and to retain sins, as well as remit them. (Matt. 18:18; John 20:23.) He is the light of the world, (John 8:12,) but he blinds unbelievers. (John 9:39.) He is a Rock, for a foundation, but he is also to many a stone of stumbling. (Isaiah 8:14.)
