INTRO: (Me)
I’m excited about this series. Truth transforms! I believe that our culture is stuck. Families are stuck! We exist at BCC to move people into a more dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ. Our God is a God of movement. He is active and working and desires for us to move with Him. I don’t believe that there could be a greater movement than if man carried out God’s plan and purpose for their lives.
ILL: My arm and moving… I will drift into thinking that being a man is about lifting and proving my manhood to other men. It’s easy to draw the wrong picture of what a man is and isn’t - IS, beard growing, plaid wearing, truck driving, grocery hunting sitting in a tree stand. ISN’T, clean shaving, khaki wearing, smart car driving, sushi eating dude sitting in a coffee shop. My concept of manhood easily drifts from a biblical views of manhood to a cultural view of manhood.
The truth is every single man is called to be who God called him to be.
MoMENtum will not happen unless I move with Jesus.

(We) But when we look around at the problems in the world today. We are not moving. We are stuck. We don’t have a definition of manhood.
There is nothing more dangerous than to drift away from God’s design and plan. It causes so much pain. You can trace the existence of governmental programs and even charities to the lack of men being men. Ladies, the pain that you feel, it can be traced to a man that did not move with Jesus. He did not understand his role as protector and provider. He consumed your esteem and conquered you emotionally and moved on. That is not a biblical man!
Without a definition of manhood males pursue boyish things to try to prove manhood. If we consume more we will be a man. More beer, money, ladies etc… A consumer causes pain and is the opposite of God’s plan. He is not a man. He is a boyish black hole that sucks the life out of everyone he comes in contact with.
There is nothing more dangerous than to drift away from God’s design and plan. It causes so much pain. He did not understand his role as protector and provider. He consumed your esteem and conquered you emotionally and moved on. That is not a biblical man!
We don’t have a good historical example. Biblically, not that long ago. Boys went to work with their dads. They learned tradition and a trade and then they transitioned from boyhood to manhood.
Historically, we have many problems to cause us to be stuck today. Slavery and the injustices of separating families. When boys are ripped out of the arms of their fathers and treated as communities it is going to cause future problems. In industrial revolution the American Dream was born. The lunch box and the lazy boy were invented and dad left kids with mom and went to work. Raising children became the “women’s work” and dad’s best times became work time not family time.
No right of passage. We do not have a transition from boyhood to manhood. We’ve filled it with ADOLESCENCE. This seems to be a no man’s land. It stretches boyhood on for longer and longer periods of time.

We have no right of passage. We have no markers of when a boy becomes a man! We can’t agree. Obama care says 26, Oskar Blues says 21, Army 18, DMV 16, Disney 10, Delta 2. We have a problem. We are stuck.
(God) To get unstuck and to move into biblical manhood we need to look at the one who created manhood. During this series we are going to dig into what the Bible teaches about manhood. That is a right response. But we also need to avoid wrong responses.
The culture response is to erase gender. It states that we are all the same and in an advanced society there is no room for gender. Society can’t even decide what bathroom to use and we are advancing as a society? WRONG Key Word: Passive
The churches response isn’t much better. Masculinity has been abused. The historical church has taken away the man card. We’ve painted churches pastel and made Jesus out to effeminate. Abuser think they are masculine. Man have taken selective passages out of context and used them to be domineering. Key Word: Abuse
During this series our goal isn’t to be politically correct but biblically correct. I would like to ask you to let the Bible speak and please don’t filter truth through passivity or abuse.
Transition: For men to get unstuck and experience moMENtum we need to move with Jesus. We can do this by understanding the MECHANICS OF MANHOOD, the MESS OF MANHOOD and how to MOVE WITH JESUS!
13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. 14 Let all that you do be done in love.
Nothing about this verses is passive or abusive. ACT LIKE A MEN is sandwiched betwen four imperatives. Those commands are the tracks on which biblical manhood rolls. These is our series verse and it represents good news for men.
We are going to make no apologizes for acting like men. The people around us need to see us living out manhood. What they are seeing in the media cast men as passive, cartoon dad v/s hero hamster. Or, men are abusive villains. Need someone to play a domineering villain role, choose a man.
Arg: I don’t have what it takes! Do I have what it takes? Ladies, we are insecure we try to prove ourselves. We are insecure boys trying to prove our manhood. The GOOD NEWS of the GOSPEL is that you don’t have to check your man card. When you realize that you DON’T have what it takes.
MoMENtum will not happen unless I move with Jesus.
When something is messed up we need to go back to the beginning -
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Let us - God is a triune God. Father, son and Holy Spirit. God’s love for Himself spills out onto creation and He creates and image bearer. But man alone was not enough.

One sex alone is not enough to image God correctly.
When man and women come together, marriage, as one it is the closet thing we have to represent the nature and characteristics of God here on earth.

App: My prayer in the MoMENtum series is that you would take in the “breath of God.” That you would wake up from passivity and/or repent of abuse and look God in the face and be the man God has created and called you to be.

The Mechanics Of Manhood
1. Work To Enjoy
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
Ex: God created man to work! Work is not a result of sin.
Work = Rearranging the raw good that God had provided for human flourishing.
There are not a secular and holy jobs. Both are holy. That is why you need a calling and not a career. All jobs are holy jobs. When they are carried out by God’s children to provide for others.

2. Will To Obey

26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Ex: God was not into rules He was into relationships. Our God is a YES God not a NO God. One no and thousands of yes’s. God is good, great and generous. He says that this one thing you need to avoid because it will kill you.

3. Woman To Love
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”

Arg: The gift of singleness? In the meantime you love your mom, your sister and especially your sisters here at BCC. BTW, girls, you want to see how a guy is going to treat you watch how he treats his mom. Single men, if you wouldn’t text it to your mama don’t text it to her. If you wouldn’t sit down in front of computer/tv and watch it with mom then don’t watch it alone.
If you can’t love, honor and respect females now putting on a tux and going through a ceremony will not help you. You play like you practice.
Men Need Encouragement
Ex: It is not good for man to be alone! Ladies, you are a helper but your not the Holy Spirit. The breath of life that God breathed into man. Don’t correct but please encourage him. “The only reason you are doing this is because Mark told you to.” You are going to get farther faster with encouragement. I’ve never heard a man say, “I wish my man would stop encouraging me.”

And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. 22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.

Get your life in order before you expect God to entrust you with something very precious to Him.
Instead of looking for the ONE why don’t you become the ONE.

Men Need Companionship

Ex: Adam breaks into song! The animal were not companions. The women caused moMENtum. In Hebrew the word for woman and mine are the same word.

The animals NOT mine the Woman is mine. It doesn’t mean ownership it means companionship. Huge difference!
God math: 1 man + 1 women = 1 Marriage For Life
When I’m passive or abusive I’m really affecting my self.

God gives Adam the mechanics to move into manhood: Work to enjoy, Will to obey and a Woman to love. It is a perfect plan and goes incredible well for less then on sentence in your Bible.

1. Listening To The Liar
1 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” 2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. Ex: Crafty plan of satan. He is a liar and a deceiver. The enemy wants you to doubt God. God didn’t actually say? God is holding back on you. He is not for you. He is not good, great or generous.

2. Lures Of The Liar
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.
Ex: The enemy lied to Eve and lured them into this mess we are in. Three lures -
Good for food = Lust of the flesh
Delight to the eyes = Lust of the eyes
Make one wise = Pride of life
These are the three lures Satan will alway throw at us.

This is one of the most damning statements in then entire Bible. The reason we are in a mess. The reason you marriage is not moving into a more dynamic realm is not because you have done something wrong it is because you haven’t done anything at all. PASSIVITY!
Every has two fears that Satan can hook onto. The internal fear is - do I have what it takes? The external fear - what will she think? I’m not afraid of much. I’ve been through cancer twice! But I can go home and be terrified of a 5’2” girl.

Every man rejects God. We either do it in the REBELLION of the fruit or the RELIGION of the fig leaves. I’m going to disobey You or I don’t need your Son’s righteousness I’ll just cover my self up with something I’ve made to substitute. All men and women will move away from God or move for God. Neither cause moMENtum.

Ex: Classic messed up man move. DUCK, COVER, BLAME. God, this isn’t my fault!

You now have God’s creation corrupted. This is why we are stuck as a society. This is why there is no momentum. But it’s bigger than that. This is why on the Macro level we have hurricanes and on the Micro level we have cancer cells.

A Messed Up Man
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
This is the first Gospel! From this moment on sin is like sugar in the gas tank of the mechanics of manhood. Sin corrupts our will to obey - the liar twist God’s Word.
These lies create a great tension:
License = God is withholding something from me. I’m going to eat! Move away from God.
Legalism = I’ll take care of my own sin and cover myself with a fig leave. Move for God.

On the inside we realize that we can’t do what God designed because of the sin/sugar in our gas tank.
A Messed Up Woman
16 To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you.”
Ex: This means that this woman that God gave Adam to love and what God meant as a perfect compliment to bear His image is now messed up beyond recognition. It is now a contradiction and competition.
Ladies you were created to help. But sometimes to your husband it feels like a hostile takeover.

A Messed Up Life

All three of the mechanics of manhood are now messed up. Work to enjoy, broke. Will to obey, destroyed. Women to love, impossible. Life is messed up. I’ve tried everything. So what to we do? Women I know your frustrated.

This is a foreshadowing of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Your sin will be covered. I’m going to do for you what you couldn’t do for yourselves. The blood of an animal will be shed and I will take the skin of that animal and cover you.

The question is, do I have what it takes? NO No man has what it takes! Not one!!

When you get to that position you can then get up and move like a man. When you stand and face God after He has breathed His breath in you then and only then can you move like the man He created you to be. This is good new because with Jesus you are enough. You can do His Work, His Will and love the Wife He gave you.

17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Jesus came to do what Adam did not do. Jesus , the second Adam, lived a perfect life. Our sins are covered over by the righteous life of Jesus Christ.
The ultimate sign of strength is not how much you can drink, or how many deer you can kill or women you can conquer. The ultimate sign of strength is moving with Jesus and allowing Him to breath His breath of life into you.
With Jesus nothing can come against you! Your next move can not only change you but it can change you children and your children’s, children.
Next Move: Men if you are willing to act like a man. If you would say I can’t do this. I can’t move with Jesus by myself. I need Him. Would you stand?
