Introduction
Christ died for us and accomplished these following:
1 Peter 3:15 ESV
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,
Propitiation
Propitiation is when an offensive or upsetting matter is dealt with in a way that satisfies the offended person, in order to restore a broken relationship.
Apology, monetary restitution
God required a righteous sacrifice
Hebrews 2:17 ESV
Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
“..so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest
Unending priestly sacrifice
Holy of holies - did not skip of year
1 John 4:10 ESV
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Romans 6:10 ESV
For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.
2. Redemption
The payment of an obligation. Deliverance from sin through the incarnation, sufferings, and death of Christ.
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
Story of unforgiving servant in 18th chapter of Matthew
Weight of his dept lifted and relationship made right
3. Reconciliation
To restore to friendship or harmony
2 Corinthians 5:18–20 ESV
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
How is this possible?
4. Substitution
The act, process, or result of replacing one thing for another
Isaiah 53:5–6 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
This is an enigma for some religions. Will not except the whole notion of penal substitutionary atonement (Christ died on the cross as a substitute for sinner.
This solved the problem of Just God, justifying unjust sinners
1 Peter 3:18 ESV
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,
Romans 5:10–11 ESV
For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
The only way for reconciliation was the through penal substitutionary atonement
5. Defeat
To win victory over
Colossians 2:13–14 ESV
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
Hebrews 2:14 ESV
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
Conclusion
John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
