The Vindication of Divine Wrath: (Romans 1:18-25)
Sermon Idea: As Paul begins the body of the Epistle, he does not take the opportunity to
amplify the doctrine of justification that he introduced in vs. 17, which is a central theme
of this book, but he abruptly shifts his focus by vindicating the wrath of God.
In a sermon from October 30, 2005 R C Sproul stated the following, “You might have
expected Paul to explain the great doctrine of justification that he just introduced, but
instead he appears to be holding the good news up against the awful reality of the bad
news, that all mankind is subject to the wrath of God because we have violated God’s
Law because of our exceeding sinfulness.”
The Definition of God’s Wrath: God’s wrath is his settled hostility toward sin in all its
various manifestations.
To say it is “settled” hostility means that God’s holiness cannot
and will not coexist with sin in any form whatsoever. God’s wrath is his holy hatred of all
that is unholy.
It is his righteous indignation against everything that is unrighteous.
