Call to Worship:
Offering
Faith and Authority
Introduction:
If last week was about worship this week is about faith.
There is a direct correlation between the authority and faith.
1. Religion collides with reality.
Sometimes we have an understanding of our faith.
an understanding that misses the forest while looking at the tree’s.
I love Sunday school.
I believe in Sunday School.
when I talk about ‘Sunday School Answers’ It’s not Sunday School that I have a problem with.
its the pupils and there approach to leaning that I have a problem with.
it is easy to for us to assume that we are better than a first century Israelite.
we think that we would do better.
I doubt it.
if we are honest, we fail repeatedly in the living out of our faith.
we opt for the cliche answer that that get us the golfers clap in Sunday school.
as if we get style points in heaven for our religion.
our Lord makes this clear at the end of the passage.
I would like us to yield to the Holy Spirit, I would encourage us to take a moment to invite the Holy Spirit to search our hearts and set us right.
2. Understanding Authority and Faith.
The centenarian was in charge of one hundred men.
He understood how his authority worked.
we also know that he understood his authority to be less then the Lords authority.
this centenarian, probably a gentile understood that he was not worthy of the Lord to enter his house, he also understood that The messiah had all the power.
The Centenarian knew that the authority of Christ extended to every part of the world.
This is the thing that we don’t get the complete power.
the centenarian understood authority.
3. Religion kills the very nature of our love for God.
These people the sons of Abraham the sons of the kingdom have been resting on there national, and spiritual ‘exclusivity, ’ while quit missing the point!
the point is not what faith does for them.
the point is what faith does in Them.
in the same way, its not what knowledge does for us.
it is not what the knowledge does for us in the eyes of others it is what we do with the knowledge that serves the world.
faith by works.
to lack this is to put ourselves in the same danger as the first century Israelites.
