1. God's Tests 1-2 - The promised son at long last is here. It took years of waiting upon God's
The word translated “test” here (Piel of nsh) is used with God as subject and people as object, or with people as subject and God or other people as object.2
In testing, one is testing some value, quality, or attribute in that person. For example, when people test God, they are generally testing his patience (Ex. 17) or his faithfulness (Num. 14:22). When people test other people, they test something such as their wisdom (1 Kings 10:1). Whatever is being tested is stretched to its limits. The test of a man’s faith and obedience is always in ratio to the man’s character and person and capacity. That which would be a great trial to one person might be a small trial to another. (GD WATSON) The command has three imperative verbs
Take - has a polite formal spelling - this is rare as God hardly ever speaks to human with a please - Shows God is about to ask something staggering Go - Offer up as a sacrifice.
Abraham would not have misunderstood the command as God makes it very clear - Bill Arnold shares an interesting view of this conversation between God and Abraham. Early Jewish interpreters illustrated graphically just how specific the command was using an imaginary dialogue between God and Abraham.
"Abraham, take your son!" "Which one, God? I have two sons." "Take your only son! came God's reply. "But Lord," argued Abraham, "Ishmael is the only son of Hagar, and Isaac is the only son of Sarah." "Whom you love," answered God. "Lord, I love them both." "Isaac!"was God's solomn reply. Abraham's Obedience 3-9 God's Intervention 10-12 A Substitute - 13 A God of Provision - 14 God's Promises - 15-18 Extended Family for future Reference 20-24
