Last week we studied how Abraham hosted three visitors. Two of them Angels the third seemed to be a Christophany or a Jesus before his incarnation. He promised not only Abraham but Sarah that they would have a child very soon. This is the first time we know for sure that Sarah has been told she would have a child of promise. And she laughs. Whether our of doubt or out of humor. However it is she is reproved for laughting.
Then the mood changes from positive promise to more of a gloomy angle as God tells Abraham what he is to do next. That he is come to check out things in Sodom and Gomorroah.
No one seems to know where these cities were but Abraham was not extremly far from them in the plains of Mamre. Abraham prays and intercedes for the people of the cities but as we see in our reading there were not enought just people to prevent God from destroying them.
What did the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah do that was so wicked?
There are are several things. The most often talked about was their promiscious imoral lifestyles. Which certainly was prominent as we see from the reading. But also according to
Ezekiel 16:49 (KJV)
49 Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fulness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.
