Story of man who died and his brother pays off the pastor to say something good about his brother.
Jezebel
Baal Worshipper
Kills the prophets of Yahweh
Threatened Elijah
Stole Naboth’s vineyard and had Naboth killed.
Wife of King Ahab of Israel
1 Kings 21:25 ESV
25 (There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the Lord like Ahab, whom Jezebel his wife incited.
After marrying Jezebel, Ahab promotes the worship of Baal in Israel (1 Kgs 16:31–33). Two chapters later, the narrative credits Jezebel with killing the prophets of Yahweh, while Obadiah hides 100 of them in a cave (1 Kgs 18:4). After hearing of the massacre, Elijah confronts Ahab and challenges the 450 prophets of Baal and 400 prophets of Asherah “who eat at the table of Jezebel” (1 Kgs 18:17–19). In the showdown on Mount Carmel, Baal fails to respond to his prophets, but the “fire of Yahweh” rains down and consumes Elijah’s sacrifice (1 Kgs 18:20–38). Having witnessed Yahweh’s power, the Israelites obey Elijah’s command to seize the prophets of Baal and execute them (1 Kgs 18:39–40). Jezebel then threatens to kill Elijah, who flees into the wilderness (1 Kgs 19:2–4).
Jezebel plotted to steal the property of Naboth. Taking the property, she had Naboth killed to procure it.
It is this theft and murder that prompts God to say “Enough”. Elijah declares that God will avenge Naboth’s blood and Queen jezebel will be eaten by dogs.
To fully understand this story, background is necessary. That background is everything in this chapter prior to what we just read, 2 Kings 9.1-29
2 Kings 9:1–29 ESV
1 Then Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Tie up your garments, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. 2 And when you arrive, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber. 3 Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the Lord, I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.” 4 So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. 5 And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.” 6 So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. 7 And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord. 8 For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. 9 And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled. 11 When Jehu came out to the servants of his master, they said to him, “Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?” And he said to them, “You know the fellow and his talk.” 12 And they said, “That is not true; tell us now.” And he said, “Thus and so he spoke to me, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord, I anoint you king over Israel.’ ” 13 Then in haste every man of them took his garment and put it under him on the bare steps, and they blew the trumpet and proclaimed, “Jehu is king.” 14 Thus Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi conspired against Joram. (Now Joram with all Israel had been on guard at Ramoth-gilead against Hazael king of Syria, 15 but King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds that the Syrians had given him, when he fought with Hazael king of Syria.) So Jehu said, “If this is your decision, then let no one slip out of the city to go and tell the news in Jezreel.” 16 Then Jehu mounted his chariot and went to Jezreel, for Joram lay there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had come down to visit Joram. 17 Now the watchman was standing on the tower in Jezreel, and he saw the company of Jehu as he came and said, “I see a company.” And Joram said, “Take a horseman and send to meet them, and let him say, ‘Is it peace?’ ” 18 So a man on horseback went to meet him and said, “Thus says the king, ‘Is it peace?’ ” And Jehu said, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” And the watchman reported, saying, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.” 19 Then he sent out a second horseman, who came to them and said, “Thus the king has said, ‘Is it peace?’ ” And Jehu answered, “What do you have to do with peace? Turn around and ride behind me.” 20 Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi, for he drives furiously.” 21 Joram said, “Make ready.” And they made ready his chariot. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his chariot, and went to meet Jehu, and met him at the property of Naboth the Jezreelite. 22 And when Joram saw Jehu, he said, “Is it peace, Jehu?” He answered, “What peace can there be, so long as the whorings and the sorceries of your mother Jezebel are so many?” 23 Then Joram reined about and fled, saying to Ahaziah, “Treachery, O Ahaziah!” 24 And Jehu drew his bow with his full strength, and shot Joram between the shoulders, so that the arrow pierced his heart, and he sank in his chariot. 25 Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Take him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember, when you and I rode side by side behind Ahab his father, how the Lord made this pronouncement against him: 26 ‘As surely as I saw yesterday the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons—declares the Lord—I will repay you on this plot of ground.’ Now therefore take him up and throw him on the plot of ground, in accordance with the word of the Lord.” 27 When Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled in the direction of Beth-haggan. And Jehu pursued him and said, “Shoot him also.” And they shot him in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo and died there. 28 His servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his tomb with his fathers in the city of David. 29 In the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab, Ahaziah began to reign over Judah.
The entire story can be understood in the context of 2 verses- 2 Kings 9.6-7
2 Kings 9:6–7 ESV
6 So he arose and went into the house.
2 fold purpose:
Destroy the house of Ahab
Avenge the blood of God’s prophets and servants
Jehu’s commentary on the prophecy (v. 37) is in harmony with Elijah’s words. The king’s complete lack of respect for Jezebel in her death reflects how he and God, as well as the godly in Israel, viewed this callous sinner who had been directly and indirectly responsible for so much apostasy and wickedness among God’s people.
The greatest delinquent in the house of Ahab was Jezebel. She knew how to stir up trouble.
2 Kings 9:30 ESV
30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window.
2 Kings 9:31 ESV
31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?”

EVIL KNOWS NO AUTHORITY

I. Jezebel challenged all authority.
She had heard that Jehu had slain her son, for her evil- and had buried him in Naboth’s vineyard at the direction of the Lord- and she knew he was now coming to Jezreel to find her.
Notice what she does:
1. She puts herself in a window to challenge Jehu.
Jehu was God’s judgment for her evil.
A heart hardened against God will stare him down to the last- will ignore his pleas- will never never never give in to the Holy Spirit.
Job spoke of the heart of an evil person...
Job 15:26 ESV
26 running stubbornly against him with a thickly bossed shield;
2. She put on her makeup and did her hair.
2 Kings 9:30 ESV
30 When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and adorned her head and looked out of the window.
She wanted to appear as royalty. She wanted to appear majestic, she thought she was unstoppable and Jehu would end his mission.
In the book of Isaiah, God called Israel to repentance, and there is this strange couple of verses that speak to this scene in 2 Kings with Jezebel.
Isaiah 22:12–13 ESV
12 In that day the Lord God of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth; 13 and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”
The prideful heart that cannot be tamed is an evil heart. It will come to ruin.
The evil heart has no authority and will submit to nobody- even God.
3. Instead of trembling before God’s messenger, she expected God’s messenger ( and therefore God) to tremble before her spectacle.
2 Kings 9:31 ESV
31 And as Jehu entered the gate, she said, “Is it peace, you Zimri, murderer of your master?”
Zimri- you trader who will ultimately die.
A. She didn’t notice that the hand of God (Jehu) had gone out against her family. All she could see was Jehu- when she should have recognized Yahweh.
That’s how evil she had become. We all have the thumbpring of God upon our lives, but evil steals that from even our own self awareness.
B. She believed that even though she may die, she was taking Jehu with her. Notice how evil misguided “authority” believes that anything against them must be in the wrong.
Philippians 1:28 ESV
28 and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God.
C. Had Zimri peace?
Zimri was a king of Israel who ascended to the throne not by God’s direction but by Zimri’s ambition.
To associate Jehu with Zimri was not a truth, but an insult. Jehu was there by God’s anointing, God’s direction , and God’s plan. Zimri was not. That is why his kingdom only lasted 7 days.
2 Kings 9:32 ESV
32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him.

RIGHTEOUSNESS HAS FEW FRIENDS

Where Jesus is the only attraction the crowds will be small.
Jehu asked for help. Who’s on my side? Who?
Jehu was called to do God’s work, and he calls for assistance.
There are times when the Righteous will stand alone, as in Isaiah 63.5
Isaiah 63:5 ESV
5 I looked, but there was no one to help; I was appalled, but there was no one to uphold; so my own arm brought me salvation, and my wrath upheld me.
Moses raised the standard of yahweh in Exodus 32.26
Exodus 32:26 ESV
26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him.
The Psalmist asked the same in Psalm 94.16
Psalm 94:16 ESV
16 Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers?
when it is time to reform, the question must be asked, “Whose side are you on?”
2 Kings 9:32–33 ESV
32 And he lifted up his face to the window and said, “Who is on my side? Who?” Two or three eunuchs looked out at him. 33 He said, “Throw her down.” So they threw her down. And some of her blood spattered on the wall and on the horses, and they trampled on her.

LET GOD BE YOUR GUIDE

Her own attendants threw her down- a form of stoning.
Why did they do it?
Secret hatred for her?
Fear of what would happen to them?
Perhaps, if God had ordered and justified Jehu’s actions, they knw what was right and God would justify theirs.?
2 Kings 9:34–37 ESV
34 Then he went in and ate and drank. And he said, “See now to this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king’s daughter.” 35 But when they went to bury her, they found no more of her than the skull and the feet and the palms of her hands. 36 When they came back and told him, he said, “This is the word of the Lord, which he spoke by his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the territory of Jezreel the dogs shall eat the flesh of Jezebel, 37 and the corpse of Jezebel shall be as dung on the face of the field in the territory of Jezreel, so that no one can say, This is Jezebel.’ ”

EVIL’S ULTIMATUM

It will end.

EVIL’S ULTIMATUM

It will end.
Jehu remembered that Jezebel, in spite of her evil way, was a human- was a son, a daughter, a wife, a person. she must be buried.
Jehu also forgot that God had already decreed that the dogs would destroy her presence on the face of the earth. There would be no burial, no tombstone, no remembrance of her wickedness.

EVIL’S ULTIMATUM

Jesus- It is Finished.
Church at Thyatira- Revelation 2.21-23
Revelation 2:21–23 ESV
21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works.
Revelation 20:10 ESV
10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
Revelation 20:12–15 ESV
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:15 ESV
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
