Matthew 14:22-36
My grandma is 80% irish, people call her iris
Gravity, one of the most basic forces in nature, but if you remove it, you still have gravy.
This text if you are a church member is engrained into your mind. So much of this information wont be brilliant new information but hopefully it will reignite something you had learned and knew and will cause you to move forward. I know youre thinking get out the boat. he will get you. Lets go home.
John 6:16 ESV
16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea,
In Matthew it says...
14:22
22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.
RIght after a feast of a king that leads to life.. choose which kingdom you want to be a part of... and he goes to this story... he makes the disciples get in the boat... so he has intention... he knows what is happening next...
Next, he dismisses the crowd. Thats important becasue the rabbi is the one who allots the time of gathering.. so maybe you can see he is the teacher how to live life and how to grow deeper intimacy..
ANother story they wanted to make him king... so this is the idea that he is the authority....
The teacher and the king.. but he is pushing the idea further...
Job 9
2“Truly I know that it is so:
But how can a man be in the right before God?
3If one wished to contend with him,
one could not answer him once in a thousand times.
4He is wise in heart and mighty in strength
—who has hardened himself against him, and succeeded?—
5he who removes mountains, and they know it not,
when he overturns them in his anger,
6who shakes the earth out of its place,
and its pillars tremble;
7who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
who seals up the stars;
8who alone stretched out the heavens
and trampled the waves of the sea;
Habakuk 3:13
3 You went out for the salvation of your people,
for the salvation of your anointed.
You crushed the head of the house of the wicked,
laying him bare from thigh to neck.
Selah
14You pierced with his own arrows the heads of his warriors,
who came like a whirlwind to scatter me,
rejoicing as if to devour the poor in secret.
15 You trampled the sea with your horses,
the surging of mighty waters.
In the old testament a major theme is the idea that God is one that treads the water...who wlaks on water....
He doesnt say I want tyou to see me as teacher and king... but as GOD... thatis what he is trying to do here...
23-25.
23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but the boat by this time was a long wayfrom the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
3-4 miles
Between 3-4 am.... and these guys are freaking out... waves everywhere... and they are going crazy... and they look out and see this figure... and we are screaming about something bad happening,, and you see this shadowy figure.... and that is how they respond...
26-27
26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.”
Isnt it interesting that the first trouble is when they see him trying to reveal himself they have a misudnerstanding...
and we do that when we are going through a trial.. God why dont you care for me why dont you love me... we have no idea what we are saying... and this is a problem.... if we misunderstand someone who isnt really important
Dont know who people are... you know who that is right.
We look to Jesus in times of trial and call him things he isnt. Y ouhate me you dont care for me... you arent who you really are...if its me I get to the boat and say come on guys/./get out what sis wrong with you... and you would expect him to react in anger... but he doesnt... and their mistake and misunderstanding he dosnt condemn them... and they get it wrong and he says do not be afraid it is I... and this is loaded with Exodus there.. I am... the same I am is here with you now
The I am is with you... the same God that wiith Abraham Isaac and Jacob is with you now... that is grace... that in the trouble that is him showing his love... and in times of waiting and difficulty... what do we do
Did not stop the waves He wants to refine us... do not ask for an easier life... ask to be stronger... dont ask to get me out of this situation ask me to be strong enough to get through it. This is Jesus inentention that they go through it.. and the whole point is this... Jesus wants to take them where they did not intend to go to produce in them something they could not achieve on their own. this is what he is trying to do... that is love that is grace...
HE doesnt rebvuke us in the misunderstanding... he loves and cares... and tells us the I am is with us...
Then this beautiful thing happens where Peter says 28...
8And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
. picture that...dark,,. waves going crazy,,.. if you had to ask Jesus anything it probably wouldnt be that.. Id say Jesus chill this stuff out... and often times we do that we command him to do stuff...
God if you love me you will give me that job today.... if you love me you will give me a woman to marry... if you really love me you will play my favorite song next.... thats how we pray... with guarantees... and Peter doesnt command God to do anything. he asks for a way to be obedient... God call me out.. ask me to come to you... and maybe we need to stop commanding him of things, but ask him to help us to move and ask what we can do for him...
and this beautiful thing happens in verse 29...
29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
Remember in the beginning we talked about how in the OT God was the one who treaded the water... and now he is able to do something only God can do... he wlaked on water... you expect Jesus to do it... but peter allowed to do smething that only God himself can do?
If you are a Christian you ahve to give up on your dreams because they are not big enough for what he has for you... obey... ask him to use you..
30-31
0But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
FOr 2000 years we have made fun of Peter for like five second of his life... I can imagine hed be tired o hearing abotu it our natural reaction would be oh man that is going to kill me...its scary... its just what you would do.... maybe that is the point... our most natural response is what he is trying to capture and move...
John Calvin... self denial is going aginst what is most natural to us... and that is what he is trying to change is our first response...
Rain.. fish tail
<y first reaction had to change... I didnt want to die... my desire had changed... tjhe old way wa gone... you used to think about your circumstances didferently... and Jesus is telling them the same thing...
People in troublng situations that have their eyes right on Jesus they arent phased... I just want to know you more God... everything about my life is about you... look at Paul/.. all that he went through... and he said to live is Christ and to die is gain... it is so much btter than anything else... and when you see that in real life it changes you completely.
The first generation loves the gospel... the second generation assumes the gospel... the third generation despises the gospel... And here I am I was that third category...
I had to see the hard tiems and it was the seed planted in me that blossomed when everything went to pot. Sometimes taking our eyes off JEsus isnt external circumstances... it is the thigns we have done... Jeff
Ragamuffin Alcoholic after he became a Christian... How... took my eyes off Jesus. WE are sitting here today and maybe you have taken your eyes off him... you feel like you are horrible like your sin is too deep to buy back.
Eventhough fear tells you otherwise... there is no sin big enough to eclipse Gods ability tio redeem it. Peter messed up.. he looked away it was his natural reaction... and Jesus calls it out... why did you doubt....
James says doubt is washing between two waves back and forth...
He is talking about this time of doubt... for a moment only you believed in me...
Haiti... candy.... love me... and they leave... doesnt trust you... doubt cuts off relationships... why dont you beleive in me... why didnt you see that I am was right here... and the whole point is he started this interaction becasue he wanted to take you to a place that you dint want to go on your own...
and verse 32-33
2And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
First time... you are the son of God...Other storm story.... Who is this man that he commands even teh winds and the waters.... in the middle of a struggle it gets you to think of something bigger.... how did this even happen... maybe tehre is something to this God thing... and the first time you go through trobule you have all these questiosn... and the second time the trial and the trouble is how he revealed himself...
If you are going through something an d you know him more deeply after... it was worth it... to know him deeply and more... it was worth it....it may have been uncomfortable but that is grace. He wanted to produce in you soemthing you cant achieve onm your own.
34-36
34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick 36and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.
The whole point of him walking on water was for them to know him... and when they arrive where they went they knew exactlyh what to do... to bring people to him... and that is our goal... to know and make known... we should be so moved in our hearts and see the people in Starbucks and at work and realize they need something much deeper. and we should be overwhelmed by the demand... and there should be somethign there for us...there is a deeper sickness in every individuak that only he can heal... and that I am is here today...
