I wonder if you have ever purchased something that you later regret. A new phone that you drop on day one and crack the screen. Or a brand-new car that you regret when the monthly repayments begin to kick in and bleed your bank balance. Or a new piece of clothing that somehow doesn’t fit or look quite as nice on you as it seemed to in the shop. There’s a technical term for this. It’s called buyer’s remorse. In our passage this week we continue the same theme from last week, where Peter, in 2 Peter 2, pulls no punches against false teachers in the church. There’s no getting around it, to Westerners, the language is confronting. Why all this ‘ranting and raving’ from Peter here? Because Peter knew what was at stake, namely the Gospel itself. Buy rebuking these false teachers, he wants to save us from another kind of ‘buyer’s remorse’ – a spiritual one. Namely, giving into the deceitfulness of sin, that ultimately leads to destruction.
