Introduction
Torah Portion
This Torah Portion goes from Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17
In our previous Torah portion we talked about consequences- Because; the heel - representing the walk; the difference between keeping and doing
and the significance of numbers 2, 40 and the covenants of God - tablets
We discussed the meaning behind the name Yaakov and how God changed his name to Israel
We talked about the issues of rebellion
Who is rebellious = serpents and scorpions
The importance of a test from God
How Messiah is the Law of Gods
The love of God and the Fear of the Lord
And more importantly about testing = 40
In today’s Torah portion we will expand on the reason for testing
We will define testing in a broader light
Re’eh
Behold
ראה rʾh see; understand; spy, reveal, look at, examine, inspect; show
ראה rʾh /reche/ see; understand; spy, reveal, look at, examine, inspect; show
These blessings and curses are to be recited in mount Gerizim and mount Ebal respectively later (v-29)
The idea of behold is that Moses is speaking to each individual to see (See = individual) and the world is both righteous and wicked
So far Moses has focused on revere the Lord, but now he is focusing on spelling out some commandments
The exhortation is that the Israelites choose what the Lord gave them in Exo 20.
As He identified Himself as their God- almighty
Because of that He has put goodness before them if they obey
Same for us
When He says “blessings and curses” it is also a reminder that in this fallen world both exist.
It is only after Messiah returns we we will only have blessings
We become what we behold: If we behold evil we will become evil, if good - then good.
Only God is good
There is a decision we need to make
Both choices have consequences
This choice is not arbitrary (or relative), not up to you.
The choice is to obey or not the commandments
The blessing does not come w/o obedience
The cursing will come w/o obedience
A blessing is addition of the good that God has given us
A curse means a diminishing of that good
The word KELALAL (curse) the word KALLAK (light)
Blessings means a gift- the increase of becoming more light like Yeshua
How do I behold the Lord?
First let us consider Deut 11:28 again.
How do we turn away?
If we depart (turn aside from) the way which I command you today after other gods
Observe the Law = Jesus
All the days = Everyday
Uterly destroy the places where the nations served other gods
Not to mix other gods with God
Break the pillars= break any root
You shall not worship your God as such
We are not to depart from His way
What has happened during the last 2000 years?
The law of God was removed
The Feasts of God also prohibited
The culture of Israel hated
The temples used for Greek Idol worship were turned into a temple to worship God/ Yeshua
The selection of Israel as His people replaced for the election of the Gentiles
We have added and removed things from the truth of God - or not teach the truth at all
The divinity of the Torah is denied by idol worship
If you deviate slightly, you will at the end serve other gods
By our choice we curse ourselves
Deception is the vehicle to curse
The sages explain that “anyone guilty of idolatry is as if he had abandoned all of God’s commandments.
If anyone acknowledges that there is any substance to it is considered as having denied all aspects of the Torah
How do we behold ( rʾh see; understand; spy, reveal, look at, examine, inspect; show) the Lord?
You must listen, keep - understand and hear all the words which I command you- this implies studying the law to keep it within you that it should not be forgotten.
Just as He said:
The rabbis would say: but the one who is not amongst who study cannot be amongst those who act correctly
To observe and hear means to observe and hear the law regarding the blood which is to be poured on the altar
One of the major issues is we can very easily be deceived if we do not know the law.
Jesus said when asked about the end times:
Peter also warned:
John also warned
Paul also warned:
Therefore, it is very important for us to know the truth of the law - the light that brings the darkness in us for our repentance, so that no one has the ability to deceive us.
This warning is not new- don’t think it is new because it is in the new testament
This warning and the tools to prepare for this attack were given to us in the Torah about 3500 years ago and even after the resurrection and ascension of Messiah.
Consider the following warning in the Torah
What has happened during the last 2000 years?
The law of God was removed
The Feasts of God also prohibited
The culture of Israel hated
The temples used for Greek Idol worship were turned into a temple to worship God/ Yeshua
The selection of Israel as His people replaced for the election of the Gentiles
We have added and removed things from the truth of God - or not teach the truth at all
The divinity of the Torah is denied by idol worship
If you deviate slightly, you will at the end serve other gods
By our choice we curse ourselves
Deception is the vehicle to curse
In the latter days - end times
Mountain - Sinai, Jerusalem, Mount of Olives
Nations will come - not to influence Israel and worship other gods, but to learn at the House of Jacob
Yeshua will teach His ways, paths so that we walk, how?
By the Law going from Zion (Israel) and the word from Jerusalem
Jesus did not only teach and He also did what He taught
He gave the apostles commandments
He gave proofs that the commandments can become a reality
He put them through a test during 40 days -regarding the kingdom of God
The power of the Holy Spirit given to be witnesses - to do and to teach
Where?
Jerusalem, Judaea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth
